@agold: my oldest was a pacifier sucker too and we constantly had the mouth rash until we finally dropped it around 2.5 years old - drove me nuts! Thought we lucked out with our youngest not wanting a pacifier but alas the finger sucking is even worse and harder to break, and the mouth rash may be even more consistent. Sigh.

Thanks all! The rash seems better today. It stopped spreading....she still has bumps around her mouth, but she tends to get that anyway because of the finger sucking. The couple pimples or hives that were drifting up her face seem to be resolving, and there are no new ones on her face (and none on the rest of her body). No fever or crankiness - she’s has high energy as ever. Fingers crossed it was just yet another random toddler rash with no real explanation! Keeping an eye on it to make sure the rash doesn’t come back in case it’s related to something she’s allergic or sensitive to that I haven’t noticed.

Thank you all for the responses!

@castilrm: I’ve seen HFM present a ton of different ways. My son’s friend (who we got it from) just had one sore on his mouth that looked like a cold sore. My son just had some spots on his hands, nothing else. No fever or other signs of illness. My 6 mo (at the time) had the full body spots, but nothing inside his mouth. So I’d probably get it checked ASAP, just in case.

@agold: the slapped cheek thing is Fifth Disease.

Hand foot and mouth ALWAYS looks like a pimply rash on my kids. However, the rash always comes after a fever (and lethargy, poor appetite, general not feeling well). If there hasn't been any sort of fever or general malaise, I wouldn't think it's HFM.

Any rash or bumps anywhere else on the body? My kids get HFM spots on their bum cheeks.

@castilrm: I'd take her sooner rather than later. It doesn't sound like HFM, which is the slapped cheek thing. My 1 yo very very recently had a pimple looking diaper rash. I'm kicking myself becuase I didn't even google what it could be. But she had her 1 year check up just a few days later. The doctor told me that its a different kind of diaper rash like a yeast infection or something. I may not be remembering this right. But the doctor said they would give medicine for it. My daughter's rash had started to get better by the third day. But I do recall the doctor saying this could be on the face, too. My 2.5 y.o. also has dry spots that sometimes get red around the bottom of her lip because of a bad pacifier habit. (insert hand in face emoji) That particular thing going on with her has never spread and has never looked pimply. I am trying hard to get her off the pacifiers and I use CeraVe cream on her three times a day. And now lastly... my niece was a finger sucker until at least 5 or 6. She now has a lazy tongue and is in speech therapy. (hand in face emoji again) I'm trying hard to get my girl off the pacifier because I'm concerned about some dental stuff. Ugh. Anyways.. just take your girl to the doctor maybe if it doesn't get better by tomorrow.

Hi all!
My toddler has a pimply rash spreading around her mouth and cheeks. She tends to have a rash around her mouth anyway thanks to her finger sucking habit, but the usual rash is spreading up her cheek. No fever and no rash elsewhere so far. It almost looks like individual hives but I can’t think of what would be causing it. I thought at first hand foot mouth disease bc she was around a toddler who has it earlier in the week, but she doesn’t have fever and no telltale rash on her hands or feet or inside mouth. Obviously we’ll take her in if the rash continues or symptoms change but looking for some reassurance that hopefully HFM disease doesn’t present this way! We have a ton of family coming to visit for the long weekend and that would be a huge damper. Thanks-
