It was before Christmas, so about 8-8.5 months. I remember because he was trying to pick little specks of food off the kitchen floor and put them in his mouth. Ew!

I think around 9 months if I remember correctly? The best way for her to develop it is practicing by feeding herself. At first she will use her palm to get the food into her mouth but she will develop the pincher grasp! Good for her hand-eye coordination too!!

I wasn't paying super close attention to this, but DD is 10.5 months and I've only recently noticed her doing the pincer grasp. But part of that could be we weren't really giving her tiny things to practice on? Just big chunks of food she could pick up in her fist. She's using it to pick up Cheerios now.

Thanks everyone! Even just since I posted this, she's managed to pincer grasp some of her puffs to her mouth so I think we're getting close to figuring this out!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: she grabs her tag and other small toys with her thumb and forefinger. But something about the transfer to the mouth, things end up more fisted.

I think we are getting close. I notice DS will use his pincer grasp when he grabs smaller things like my necklace or tags on toys. With food he tries but gets exhausted by it and reverts back to his fist. He actually face planted into his food because he got so frustrated by not being able to put food in his mouth. I think it's soon though!

@Mrs.KMM: hey there! :-) our LO's are pretty much the same age, and J is just getting the hang of it now. I would say that even 2 weeks ago though, she was just mashing everything. It was like a light bulb went on! hahah she still palms some of her food, especially the soft banana-type stuff, but she's gotten pretty good at the pincer grasp in the last week or so!

@Mrs.KMM: besides mealtime does she have an opportunity to practice the pincer grasp? On the blog there was a story about Montessori mystery baskets and those looked like a good way to teach babies how to grasp.

At what age did your child figure out how to use a pincer grip?

DD is 8.5 months and loves to eat small pieces of our meals, puffs, and yogurt melts. But whenever she tries to pick these things up, she just ends up with them in her fist and then cannot figure out how to transfer them to her mouth.

I know once she figures out the pincer grip, she will become better at being able to feed herself. I just don't know when to expect this to happen!

ETA: Pincer grasp/grip = picking up small objects with the thumb and forefinger.
