Most doctors give it... I had the same situation as @Mrs. Yoyo: My water broke but my body didn't go into labor, despite them giving me 24 hours to see if it would. (That's UK policy, not US)</p> <p>I was induced with a high dosage of pitocin because every time they stopped it, my contractions stopped. My epi never worked so I labored med-free, which was not fun. Once things got going, I went from 2cm to 10cm in 3 hours. After I had my first and had a postpartum hemmorage, I was given methergine as an oral prescription to get my uterus to contract down faster. After my second delivery I had 6 methergine shots during my hospital stay. My uterus was almost back down to normal before I left! But damn those shots hurt like hell. But I did receive it after birth to increase uterine contractions/prevent postpartum hemorrhage. The Dr. wanted to give me pitocin right away but I asked for a bit of time and the contractions started again but the Dr. was acting very antsy so I ended up getting a bit of pitocin. Ended up getting pitocin after 12 hours of being in labor and water being broken. Of course, we later found that we probably could have broken the other sack of water instead of pitocin. I had a vaginal birth with no pain medication and I think that is because they never got a good heartbeat from him.
