@Mrs.Someone: I think there could definitely be a connection. I have learned since being in the NICU that a lot of premature babies are from families that struggled with IF and they don't exactly know why. The MFM that delivered me did say that in another pregnancy they would have me take daily baby aspirin to try to prevent placental issues and pre-e. I'm really hoping they do more research into this stuff!

I'm starting to wonder if a lot of IF issues are the root cause of these placenta issues. My problem is/was autoimmune issues which cause blood clots and made implantation hard, but it was solved with a blood thinner. Curious if some of these other placenta clot issues are a milder form of a similar issue. I guess I'll have to ask the doctor how my placenta looks! Pretty interesting stuff :)

What a fascinating topic! Even from such a brief article I already learned so much. I never really gave two thoughts to the placenta, but it really plays quite a large role.

Glad the article is interesting and hopefully helpful for others, too. I know I had no interest in seeing mine, but maybe I'll think a little harder about that if there is a next time.

This is great. I had low Papp-A, which is a blood test indicating placental malfunction and it was amazing to see how little research was done in the area. My LO came out slightly growth restricted, and the pathology reports showed a blood clot and a dead area on the placenta.

@mrs. 64: This article sure makes it sound like its a good idea to get some testing. I think seeing a MFM when you're ready for a 2nd is a great idea. Seeing one was how I was finally able to get pregnant.

@Mrs.Someone: I talked to the doctor about testing for clotting disorders and he said it wasn't necessary, but I'm not so sure. At this point I'm pretty scared of having more children, but if we do decide on having another baby, I will definitely see a MFM and ask lots of questions before we try to get pregnant.

@T.H.O.U.: Thanks!

@spaniellove: Yes, it was my 6 week appt. I asked for a copy of the report for my records. We didn't know LO was IUGR until she was born. Her size was a lot more inline with a 23 weeker than 25. I hope they are able to give you some answers tomorrow.

That is fascinating! I don't even remember delivering the placenta and my husband didn't see it either (I warned him to avoid it - I didn't want him to pass out!) I didnt want to see it this time around but next time I think I'll ask to take a look. It's really remarkable what the human body can do!

Interesting article and perfect timing, because tomorrow morning I think I'm supposed to ask about the pathology results on my placenta. The OB noticed a lot of scarring and thought it might have had something to do with the IUGR or complications that I had so he had it sent to the lab.

@mrs. 64: Did you get the results at your 6 week appointment?

@mrs. 64: I thought about you when the mentioned pre-e. Its great that they studied your placenta! Are you going to be evaluated for autoimmune or clotting disorders as a result?

Very interesting article. I recently gave birth at 25 weeks because of severe preeclampsia. My placenta was sent away and I received a pathology report on it. In my case the placenta showed a large blood clot, restricted blood vessels, and evidence that the placenta was starting to tear away from the uterine wall. My daughter was also small for a 25 weeker because she was not getting what she needed through the placenta. I'm glad the medical community is starting to pay more attention to placental issues and hopefully that research will help lead to more healthy, full term babies!
