@Mrs D: @Mrs. Carrot: Gah, I must have had a super anal TSA agent then. I had them in a clear ziploc and pulled them all out and was super nice! Ha. I hate the inconsistencies, I have flown with a tiny pocket knife on my keys for the past 4 years and the most recent flight I flew they confiscated them in security. Oh well!

We've never had trouble with pouches either. I put them in a ziplock even though it's not required, and they've never even glanced to see if they're over 3 oz.

I have found with airport security the best approach is obviously 1) be nice and 2) be open and upfront about what you have. They seem to take much easier to things when you point them out as opposed to when they find them.

I always put DDs stuff in a gallon plastic bag I could pull out easy so they could see/assess. They have never opened her food containers.

I've never had a problem with pouches, but if you are worried about it print off a copy of the TSA regulations regarding kid food and take it with you. They shouldn't open it if it factory sealed.

Another thing we took was an Imagine Ink book. Similar to Color Wonder, but only one marker and the colors are on the page. She wasn't interested then (15 months) but loves it now (21 months.). https://m.buybuybaby.com/m/product/disney-mickey-mouse-clubhouse-game-activity-book-w-mess-free-marker/1041941898?skuId=41941898&mcid=PS_googlepla_nonbrand_toysbooks_&adpos=1o2&creative=76547833260&device=m&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=COz3muClpMcCFQktaQodoDUIaQ

@littlejoy: I bought DD these bc she is in a HUGE minnie mouse place and given she is not accustomed to headphones I thought the minnie mouse thing may appeal. She wore them 50% - the other time she just watched. I have found sound is kind of optional for her - she can do just fine with only the video.

I flew with my 14 mos old and I brought lots of snacks and small toys she could put in and out of things. I also took post its and let her pull them off and stick them all over the seats/tray etc. Next time we travel I am going to take on old wallet and put all kinds of things in it for her to pull out.. old business cards, fake money, notes, bandaids.. anything that'll fit

@littlejoy: You might actually find the layover a blessing! We took LO when she was 20 months on a 4 hour flight and it was not a good time trying to contain her since she got bored with everything after 20 minutes. We armed ourselves with coloring books (the Crayola magic markers that don't draw on anything but the paper are great for that), magnet books like these (http://www.amazon.com/Farm-Magnetic-Story-Play-Scene/dp/1846660874/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1439407343&sr=8-1&keywords=magnet+books), whatever videos we knew she'd watch, even for a short time, and apps (there are some fun kid ones that pop bubbles, etc.). I'd recommend anything with magnets since it's easy to contain, books with flaps, etc. Good luck!

I brought books and some toys for DS, but guess what he found the most intriguing and captivated his attention for 30 minutes?? The darn barf bag!!! I can't remember what he kept putting in and out of the bag, but it kept him occupied for 30 freaking minutes. Go figure. lol

My son loved to rip the magazines at that age, I could have used an extra trash bag, lol.

I fly with food for my son and they've never once opened it. I pack it all in clear ziplock bags and tell them as soon as I get to the belt that I have food there for my son. I've had single servings of peanut butter, tetra packs of milk, pouches, you name it. They've only ever tested the water in his straw cup because it's not factory sealed, so I usually just fill it up past security.

@littlejoy: I did little "gifts" for each 30 min increment. So each 30 mins she got to open something new. Target $1spot was great for these - they also have great activity packets.

I also did the ipad and had an arsenal of shows for her to watch.

You could do the Color Magic stuff as opposed to crayons to avoid the mess? Books, small puzzles, and as many stickers as you can pack. That was my lifesaver...

I had little pre-planned snacks too - all of her favorites so it was a super fun experience.

Finger puppets from IKEA. Lacing beads or cards. A new flap book. A little plastic photo album filled with pictures of favorite people and places. We found little, time consuming snacks better than pouches. Think raisins, cheerios, puffs, blueberries...Otherwise they fill up fast and lose interest.

@littlejoy: If they're over the liquid carry on size (the 3+ whatever oz) they will open them up to do some kind of test, so plan accordingly. We had a few in our carryon and one was 4.5 oz so they opened it for testing, so LO had a fruit/oatmeal pouch for dinner, ha!

ETA: We have been on 9 planes with LO in the past 2 months (ugh) and some of the airports have kids play areas, look for them because they are worth their weight in gold! I'm sure they're kinda gross but airports just are and LO loved watching the big kids and having somewhere to cruise (she's 10.5 mo now).

We will be flying later this month. LO will be 19.5 months old, and in her own car seat on the plane.

I bought stickers and paper, with the hopes she'd be into it. So far, meh. She's a "violent" artist with crayons -- mostly just throws them, and tries shoving them in my nose! ;)

What else should I bring? We will have our iPad and phones, though she's not into either just yet (maybe we can distract for a bit??).

Other easy crafts? Toys that worked for your kids? First time flying since she was itty bitty.
