Pouches (if you can afford them, the Happy Baby Clear have the most veggies in them), single serve peanut butter packs, cheddar bunnies, pretzels, cut up fruit, nuts, and baby carrots are our go-tos.

I like to bring muffins, mini or regular sized, but they can be crumbly, depending on the variety.

For something filling that doesn't take much space, I'd highly recommend the little Bel-Vita bites. They're very calorie dense compared to most kid-friendly foods.

I'd also see if you could pick up some of those window clings. My 3 year old loved to put them on the window while my 16 month old tore them to little shreds for over 20 minutes. They aren't actually sticky, so they're really convenient.

I usually bring the following items with me, because flights get delayed, meal service can be spotty, etc:

single serving cereal in a cup
shelf stable milk in a single serve container
single serve peanut butter
babybel cheese
sleeve of crackers
cereal bars
applesauce pouch
banana
graham cracker bites in a sealed pouch

I put the liquid items, including the peanut butter, in a clear gallon ziplock, let the TSA know it's for my son who I am travelling with and that's it. I have never had to open or throw anything away.

@lindseykaye: Pouches and drinks for children are allowed on the planes and not subject to the normal liquid restrictions. We have brought milk and pouches on so many flights and never had an issue.

@castilrm: They are a bit sticky, but it doesn't stay on your fingers or anything. We just used a diaper wipe after to wipe our hands. I didn't find them annoying at all and both kids enjoyed them (our 17 mo old and 6 year old).

I second the dollar spot as well. We were able to find a few things there as well. I also raided our office supply stash! lol

@castilrm: I like to go to the Target dollar spot to look for some new little toys/activities for flights. Novelty goes a long way as well as feeling like it's a special present.
Those soft felt books with little cutouts to place on a scene are good because they're quiet and re-usable. Also my LO likes little figures she can play pretend with on the tray. The little packs of coloring book/crayon/sticker combos are fun too.

@NorthStar: thanks! I can definitely snag some of those from my office ha! We keep the tablet on lockdown for these type of things (flights and super long car rides), so I think our 3 year old will be thrilled to be allowed to watch a Daniel Tiger episode but she gets bored after an episode or two so definitely won’t last the flight. Baby obviously wouldn’t watch but as long as she has something to chew on, she’s happy :) Are Wikistix messy? I was debating buying some but I couldn’t tell if they’d leave hands/chairs sticky? Thanks!

@castilrm: So, for distractions, I brought post it notes, including those ones where you pull out one tab at a time and they say "sign here". DS loved sticking them on the airplane window and tray in front of the seat. I also brought Wikki Stiks to stick on the windows/tray. Both were a hit to keep him occupied for at least awhile since he has zero interest in an ipad or tablet. Even little toys or items to put into and out of ziplock bags keep them interested for awhile.

@NorthStar: thanks! We’ll be flying over dinner time so we’ll definitely need some more substantial food for them (and us). We’ll probably pick up sandwiches at the airport and bring them on the flight for us and our older one but bringing pasta is a good idea for our younger one!

And sure - I’ll take any ideas on plane distractions that you’ve got! So far, planning on bringing art supplies and kid tablet for the older one and a few soft and teething toys for the younger one. We’ll have some books as well. Thanks!

@Sams Mom: This is really good to know! I've been avoiding taking things like this because I didn't even think to look it up and didn't consider it 'baby food' but seems like they would qualify even for a 5-yr old :) Thanks!

@lindseykaye: we should have a mini fridge so I definitely plan on a quick stop for milk, yogurt, cheese sticks and some fruit once we’re at the location. Good call on the lollipop though - my older one rarely gets candy so that should keep her happy on the flight!

My son really liked the Happy Baby Organics pouches. There are yogurt smoothie style ones good for breakfast or a snack, then there are a ton of fruit/veggie/grains combos for snacks, and there are even pouches with meat like beef with roasted vegetables and quinoa or salmon or chicken or turkey. I would check the TSA's site for any rules on if they count as a liquid or not.

According to this link it falls under child nourishment and isn't held to the 3.4 oz/ fits in a quart size baggy rule. It reads canned or processed baby food (pouches are processed) and any TSA agent that would block a toddler and baby from pouches on a plane and subjecting a whole plane to a pissed off kid or two is a horrible human being :P

https://www.tsa.gov/travel/special-procedures/traveling-children

I'd avoid pouches for the plane as they could be subject to the 'liquid' rule for amounts and you may have to toss them before security. We like cereal/crackers/granola for the plane as well as special plane-only treats to make a sometimes-tough situation easier. Also the rare lollipop gets packed to help with ear pressure (for your older one).

Will your hotel have a mini fridge or microwave? We tend to stop at a grocery or convenience store to pick up a few essentials for the hotel room when we travele. Yogurt, a small bottle of milk (if your kids are big milk drinkers), cheese sticks, apples, etc. If not then this is where I would stop when at your destination for some pouches or fresh things that are ok at room temp.

Have fun!

We just took a trip and did a combination of this for our 17 month old: cheerios, chex cereal (but that might not work for your 10 mo old), cheddar bunnies, and a Yumbox with fruit. So, we cut up grapes, strawberries, etc and put in the yumbox and brought that on the plane with us. We actually also included cooked pasta as we had a 3.5 hour flight and it was over lunchtime. We knew that both kids would go nuts without lunch on that long of a flight. Having several options was very helpful.

We also put each person's "snacks" in their own ziplock bag and labeled them. It was then much easier to find something when a certain person was hungry for their snacks.

Good luck!!

eta - if you need non-food distractions, I have plenty that worked for us! lol so, let me know and I can type those out here too.

For planes, I tend to go with treat-y things that they don’t otherwise get - puffs, freeze dried fruit, maybe a little box of smarties for the big kid. Mum mums are, in my house, a hit with all ages. We took a trip when our guys were the same ages and I made two ingredient banana oatmeal cookies and brought those, they were a good snack. I’d also suggest you bring a smallish Tupperware container - you can get a croissant or something and store it for the next morning, or whatever.

Okay, sorry for my millionth post on travel advice! I’m a planner :) I’ll be taking a two hour flight and staying in a hotel for 4 days with my toddler (3 years old) and 10 month old. Are there are any suggested snacks or food pouches that would travel well and be appropriate for both ages? My toddler is a pretty good eater and my 10 month old has been fairly good about trying new foods as well but obviously she’s still learning how to handle a solid foods diet, so the foods need to be more geared toward her palate. We’ll generally be eating while out and about, but I’m sure we’ll need distraction snacks for the flight and the girls wake up hungry so it would be helpful to have something to snack on and keep them cooperative while we get ready for the day. Any food pouches out there that people have really liked and found to be decent in terms of nutrition and being somewhat filling as a snack? Thanks!!
