@winniebee: The Killing is GREAT but I'm not sure how how easy it would be to watch and follow if you can't sit and watch the entire thing. So much goes on, you really need to focus on it. But it's totally worth it! Very good show.

For lighthearted middle of the night stuff - I'd add Curb Your Enthusiam (depends on your style of humor though), Community, How I Met Your Mother, 30 Rock, and don't forget older sitcoms if you have Netflix. I like to watch Cheers now when I can't sleep ;)

@Running Elley: @Mrs. Wagon Haha I'm so glad you said that. My husband just bought this network hookup for our tv so we can watch anything on our home media storage on our tv in the bedroom. He doesn't mind the tv in the bedroom being on when he's sleeping, so I'll have something other than infomercials to watch at 3am! :-)

I ended up watching hgtv almost all day in the background on my leave, now I wish I had a list of shows to watch!

My go-to favorites that are easy to watch half-awake and still follow the timeline:
Modern family, happy endings, arrested development, HIMYM, big bang theory, the office UK, friends, seinfeld.

@Running Elley: I watched a TON of TV while on mat leave. I watch less now that I have a toddler running around. I also watch Netflix on the iPad.
What I don't get is how can you be so busy that you watch no TV? A newborn is, let's face it, a bit boring. I enjoyed watching my shows while he was sleeping. Sure, I napped too, but when he was napping four times a day, I didn't nap all the time!

24 is so good...I didn't watch it forever and once I started I was so addicted...lots of late nights watching episode after episode.

Parks and Rec is funny

Good Wife is also good

I loved Friday Night Lights

Southland

Parenthood - I cry almost every episode

Downton Abbey is fantastic - but I'm not sure how easy it would be to follow if you're running low on sleep. :) We both really like Big Bang Theory and New Girl - light, funny - good 3:00 AM TV.

I am SO glad to hear that normal people watch TV on maternity leave! I've always assumed that during feedings, up late with the baby times, etc. that's what I'd be doing but one of my friends just had her baby in February and 2 weeks after he was born we saw her and her husband. They were talking about how they were probably going to cancel Netflix because they hadn't turned on their TV in weeks. When DH and I got back in the car we both looked at each other totally shocked! We thought maybe it was one of those "you won't understand until you're a new parent" things.
