I would skip it and continue to skip until your youngest is fully immunized (not just first round of shots - MMR vaccine isn't given until 12 mths in Canada).

If it were just my vaccinated almost-2yo, I'd have no qualms about it, but with a newborn, I'd be nervous, particularly with the proximity to the measles outbreak :(

I would politely decline but let her know it is only because your newborn isn't vaccinated yet, and that you would be happy to do the playdate once they are able to have their vaccines, and thank her for letting you know. Your child's safety should definitely come first, but you can and should certainly be as courteous as she was when she let you know her child was unvaccinated.

As an adult I don't know which of my friends as adults or if I myself am fully vaccinated against all these diseases (just because we got the vaccines at some point doesn't mean we have full immunity from my understanding). I would appreciate the heads up but with my newborn, I kept her close and understood that even that first round of vaccines don't cover the multitude of things kids pass around. If I kept my kid away from everyone til she was "fully vaccinated" no one would have ever met her. But I also know that everyone's comfort level is different no matter your vaccination schedule.

@hilsy85: Yeah, I was kind of thinking that too. An older child would probably be exposed to more, but even a 6-12 month old baby could be going to daycare, playgroups, church/nursery, etc. and be exposed to quite a bit. In all honesty, J was out and about a lot before her 1st birthday... I hope measles doesn't become such a problem that DD#2 can't do the same.

@78h2o: I think the difference is that an older child would likely be in school or classes where they would be exposed to other kids and those illnesses, whereas if it were another unvaccinated infant, presumably they are not as exposed. I could be wrong though!

I would definitely skip the playdate.

I just took DD2 (9 months) to her doctor today because she had a fever, slight cough, and has been really miserable. My neighborhood is kind of crunchy and I was terrified shed picked up measles (I know, I know, that's why I said paranoid!) or something she is too young to be vaccinated for yet from an unvaccinated friend of my 2.5 year old. Fortunately DD is fine, just a cold/cough, but I had some doubts so felt we needed to go in.

After my 2.5 year old also picked up some gross ailments from activities, I'm skipping public playgroups (like library storytime) where I'm not sure rooms/toys are cleaned properly, and will be more cautious about who they're playing with until my youngest can be fully vaccinated. Maybe it's a bit in the crazy side, but I don't care.

I didn't take J to play dates until she got her first major set of vaccines at 8 weeks. So, I would probably skip play dates until then.

After that point, I'm not sure what I would do. I don't think most kids get their MMR vaccine until 1 year, correct?

I sort of feel like if I would skip a play date because of this unvaccinated kid, I might as well skip all play dates with other babies under 1 year (since they would also be unvaccinated). Or is my reasoning faulty?

It's really scary and unfortunate that we are having this issue with measles. I plan to take DD#2 to play dates after her 2 month vaccines, but if we have confirmed cases of measles in our city at that time, I'm not sure what I'll do!
