We use it only for water and it works great. I love that both sides drain and that there is a cover. And the coverage of the umbrella is good too. We haven't tried it with sand yet. But the water fun is so much fun, we may never add sand. He loves it and we use the umbrella because we don't have a covered space. I don't love the drain placement. I also like that both sides have plugs for easy emptying. DD loves it! I didn't want to get anything with a tall tower in the middle to obstruct views. DD loves the fish that come with it, and putting everything down the slide.
