I think the ocean is really dangerous. If you are a good swimmer and trained to avoid things like riptides, then I'd be fine with it though.

I'm such a beach baby and so is my hubby. We hope that our kids will be the same way. My family lives in Florida, and his in California and always remember going there and spending lots of time on the beach. We're going to FL when our daughter will be 5 months old and I can't wait to introduce her to the ocean :-)

Not for a LONG time. We live far away from the ocean :) I have only been like 3 times in my life!

I'd probably let them be pretty young, maybe 1 or 2? BUT, thus only if DH or I were right next to them the whole time and there weren't crazy waves or anything.

when i think about how many times i could have died at the beach, it's kinda scary. sometimes the waves were so powerful we would somersault in the water and land on our faces and get sucked into the ocean. but i loved it. i would never let my kids do that though.

i miss the california ocean sooooo much. i can't wait to take charlie and olive to the beach... in low tide!

I was actually thinking about this the other day. I grew up on the coast of NC (my childhood house was 5 minutes from the beach) and I too have memories of going to the beach. However, my mom was very overprotective and I was really scared of the ocean until I was a teen. Right now DH and I live the furthest away from the coast than we ever have (1 hour) but I'm sure I'll be taking our future kids to the beach a lot. I'm hoping I can find a happy medium because I don't want to scare my kids to death, but I want them to realize that the ocean can be dangerous. When he/she is little, I'll probably stick to playing in the sand.

When do you think you'll start letting your LO play in the ocean? By play in the ocean I mean by the shore.

I grew up in CA so my earliest memory of the ocean was when I was around 5 years old. I remember being knocked over by a wave, and experiencing the scariest feeling that I was being pulled into the water (when I really wasn't).
Do you know what I'm talking about? I also remember getting lots and lots of sand in my swimsuit.

I really don't want my LOs to experience that fear. It's a terrible feeling.

Good thing we live in GA! Nearest Ocean's 4 hours away. :P
