We got a tot gun from a preschool friend for DS's 3rd birthday. It was awkward. We just lost it, but DS was only 3. I'd probably find a way to mention it. We've had a couple family members ask since I didn't apparently hide my feelings well when my IL's brought DS toy soldiers. So much easier to have people ask up front than to deal with the awkwardness after, over and over. Best to just have one awkward conversation.

@looch: I do have to say that I was totally expecting black and white stripes for the prisoner, not a like "young punk" outfit! And so many mustaches... haha!

I think it was an innocent mistake on her part. How often does she come visit? I would just hide the whole toy once she is gone (assuming she hasn't already left) if it bothers you. I know he will ask for it but he will get over it.

@looch: could you explain to your son about the offensive pieces? Why you don't like them and just say you prefer he didn't play with those types of things? I wouldn't overthink it! You could just "lose" them...

The issue is that my son's 5, if the parts disappear, he's going to notice.

The whole toy really rubbed me the wrong way...the way the criminal is dressed, the actions that thecriminal breaks out of the jail cell, the weapons are the least of it and the easiet to rectify.
It bothers me on a lot of levels, but the thing is my MIL loves playmobile and I am sure she mentioned that she was getting this to my husband and probably said it was fine (not even looking further into it). This alone isn't something to even mention, we see them twice a year, but I do wish she would have asked me about it. I have to figure out how to bring it up so she runs the stuff by me. I am always full of suggestions.

I'm going to go ahead and guess she probably didn't even look closely enough before buying it to realize that! From the front it just looks like a fun stereotypical boy's toy.

If you're bothered by the weapons I'd just toss them. It's not something to make an issue over.

So for me it wouldn't be an issue but if it were is probably just take the parts you don't like out. Seems easy enough?

I would probably just hide the offensive items and not say anything. Now, if she offers a second, similar gift in the future, I would say something, or have you DH say something.

I've explicitly told my family members that we won't accept any gun-related toys, but I don't know if my husband has said the same to his family, even though he shares my POV.

My mother in law bought this police station for my son for Christmas. I didn't pay much attention to it until we brought it home and my son was explaining to my mother about the criminal and how he can break out of the jail cell. Upon closer inspection, there are several small guns , handcuffs and a rifle included. I think I need to make those disappear and I am just annoyed at my MIL for buying this particular set. Would you say anything, or just let it go? She didn't tell me in advance she was buying it, she basically told us when we arrived at her house for the holidays. She could have picked a hospital!
