@Mrs. Deer: they can do an X-ray to look to see if it is mechanical reflux. Ours didn't show reflux symptoms until 1 hour after eating. But they had us on it to explain the crying.

@brownie: interesting! We weren't even sure she definitely has reflux (tried to explain the nursing strike).

@Mrs. Deer: for him absolutely. I feel it made it harder for him to digest his food (because he wasn't making enough acid). Since the reflux was a symptom of his intestines and not actual reflux (we did the xray).

@brownie: do you think the meds were somehow contributing? Good for you for doing TED so long! I can do dairy/soy-free all day long but this is much much harder.

I did ted for 3 months before my son baselined . I was dairy free and soy free until he was 18 months old and we are all still soy free . He nursed until 2 years old. I am dairy and soy free for our next one but I know I can do it since I have before.

I will say we didn't see a lot of good until we got him off reflux meds at 6 months.

@Mrs. Deer: I think I remember what kind of insurance you have now, but my gut says your best bet is to give them the billing code - because then it's a black or white "yes or no", and they'll be able to tell you if it requires pre auth or not.

You should also be able to google your insurance plan & the formula name. Be specific.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I've read through some forums of people in a similar situation and it sounds like it's approved on a case by case basis (and only when the provideR writes a letter and prescribes it as DME - Durable Medical Equipment). I also called our insurance and the lady had no idea. The hard thing is that since I've anticipated her MSPI we don't have many doctors visits or proof of her issues to back us up. I think I'll call the ped tomorrow though and just sit down and talk with her about this.

@Mrs. Deer: I don't have any advice, but can you get the billing code for the elemental formula then call your insurance and see if it's covered? Even if you don't decide to take that route, you'll have the "it'll cost us thousands!" part off your shoulders (hopefully) and won't feel like such a weighty decision (literally).

@winniebee: No, not now that she's on the Zantac and I've cut food out. Since I thought she'd have MSPI and I cut everything out in pregnancy she's never had the chance to develop mucous in her stools (though after the trial of dairy there was blood). The reason I'm going off of the spitup is because it's exactly what Lucy would do. After eating dairy or soy she'd have constant chunky spitup (and eventually blood and mucous in her stool too).

@Mrs.Someone: she did have blood in her stool the time I tried dairy. Going off the spitup (copious chunky and cottage cheese like) because it's exactly what her sister with MSPI did. And the fact that it's so intermittent. If she always just spitup a bit after feeds I wouldn't think twice. But there will be zero spitup one day, then constant chunky spitup the next.

@hellobear: THANK YOU!! love the specific TJ's items! Just got the plain potato chips there yesterday and literally ate the whole bag. I didn't originally eliminate coconut and avocados but I think I need to, all the other top allergens have been out of my diet. Thanks for the encouragement!

*hugs*

my LO has MSPI/ many food protein intolerances and i've been on a restricted diet for about 6 months now..

what I did try with my ED is to do a TED in the beginning for several weeks to try to really "get everything out" and then try to add foods back in that were not in the top 8 allergen category (dairy, soy, peanuts, tree nuts (+coconuts), wheat/gluten, fish/shell fish, eggs) and i also waited on foods known to be more allergenic like avocados. i would add 1 new food in at a time for 4 days minimum before deciding to keep or take back out. if i had to take something back out and i would several days (4-7 days depending on how long i could last..) before trying to add something new in.

all i can say is i'm right there with you and it is a daily struggle trying to figure out what is best for my LO vs. balancing healthy eating for myself and preserving sanity in our household. i would only advocate doing this if it's something you feel comfortable doing as it did take a severe toll on me in the beginning knowing that I had to continue my strict diet and not being able to add back in foods and ultimately i firmly believe that mama needs to be healthy and happy so that the baby can also be healthy and happy also!

some go to foods that helped me survive the TED are:
* trader joe's quinoa/brown rice pasta (tastes SO GOOD)
* trader joe's potato chips with only potato, olive oil, and salt in the ingredients
* trader joe's allergen free snickerdoodle cookies (top 8 free)
* japanese yams (baked at 450 for 1-1.5 hrs) -- these are SOOOO good and filling.. and so sweet :) like dessert!
* if your LO can tolerate mangos (mine couldn't) trader joe's mango CHIPS found by the dried fruit/nuts section.. ingredients were only mangoes and palm oil (i think)

wall me if you want more specifics! and lots of hugs to you, i can't imagine how tough it is to have to repeat this with your 2nd LO. i'm going through this with my first and I honestly don't know if I can do this again.

What makes you think that the spitup is because of something you're eating? I've been told that it's a reflux thing, and food intolerances are either on skin or bloody poop. Is she gaining ok?

Aside from spitting up and sleep....is she super fussy? How are her stools?

We are seeing a pediatric GI this week for reflux....but my understanding is that some babies are just spitters and good doesn't necessarily impact spit up. (I eliminated dairy because he had lots of green slimy poop and since then it's been much more normal). That said a lot of reflux babies also have good intolerances. Do you think that's possible? I'll let you know what the GI doc says though :)

DD had blood in her stool so I eliminated dairy and soy. It didn't get better, so I cut back to just a few foods for a few weeks. Then every few days I would introduce 1 new food. This seemed to be quickest way I could find to get her feeling better. It was tough and for the first few weeks food was all I could think about. I never did figure out what was causing it, but by the time she was 9 months she had outgrown it. She now eats everything. I'm glad I did it. I didn't want her to go through all of them tests to figure what the problem was. Her pediatrician said even with the tests they can't always pin point it.

You must be so frustrated

I haven't done a TED, but my first was MSPI (FF on Nutramigen) and now I am eliminating dairy and soy for my DS and he just started having blood-streaked stool. I'm exhausted just thinking about eliminating more foods.

Have you seen a pediatric GI? They might have more insight into whether your insurance would cover an elemental formula. (Not to mention maybe being able to help with your LO's issues). Are you taking any meds? I know that some prenatals have soy lecithin as an ingredient.

@AmandaB8: thanks! Yeah I've held off on drops for her. Been keeping track of what I eat but I may have a few new foods a day (new as in they're allowed and I didn't think would bother her) so it's been hard to tell. I think I literally need to narrow it down to just a couple of foods because even ones that are allowed might be bothering her.

I don't have any advice, but *hugs* mama. Good luck in figuring out what will help that little tummy.

Are you doing Vitamin D/iron drops? My brother was allergic to iron supplements, and projectile vomming was what happened. Are you keeping a food diary? Maybe it will help pinpoint things.

If you've been on an elimination diet... How did it go? Were you ultimately able to identify the foods that bothered your baby and continue on with breastfeeding?

I eliminated dairy and soy before Rose was born since big sister has MSPI. Good thing I did because I tested dairy with her and it's apparent she has it too. But even so, over these past few months I can tell something else I'm eating is bothering her still. She'll go a day without spitting up then the next she'll spitup 5+ after each feeding (some projectile). She's also a crappy sleeper and is on Zantac for reflux.

So two weeks ago I embarked on a TED and we are struggling immensely. Since her six week nursing strike (yeah, that was hell) we've had to switch to pumping and bottle feeding. Those issues have also really impacted my milk supply and I'm only able to barely pump exactly what she needs everyday. On top of that, it still seems like something I'm eating is bothering her. Today she's already projectile spitup three times.

I'm feeling so defeated. I can't believe after all the struggles I went through breastfeeding my first (though we persevered for 18 months) that I'm having an even more difficult time with my second. It sucks.

I'm now seriously considering formula but that's a whole other struggle too. Our pediatrician doesn't think our insurance will cover an elemental one, but I hate to switch her to a hypoallergenic one, have her still be unhappy, then be stuck paying thousands out of pocket for an elemental one.

Don't know where I'm going with this other than I just don't know that I can keep doing this, but I feel stuck. On top of these feeding issues I'm dealing with some post partum depression/anxiety. So this all seems completely overwhelming.

Any advice or stories of similar situations would be so appreciated!
