We have the same size space dedicated in our living area. I asked for books, books, and more books. We also got the little people school bus (bonus: all the people get stored inside) the Barnum Drum (another storage toy) and a pop corn popper to help with walking were the favorites. If people asked for toy suggestions i told them nothing big it should fit in a toy box.

Do you have the ability to use toys outside? You can get a few things and put them away for spring.

An activity table like the one below would get a lot of use. Fill it one day with pasta and scooping toys, take it outside with water another, etc. then cover it up and use daily as a table with chair. LO can play with trains on top or make art projects. It's not cheap, but will get a lot of varied use, and is good bang for the buck. Multipurpose items are best for small spaces.

Flat wooden puzzles? Melissa and Doug have some good ones. L liked to play with the different pieces before she was interested in actually doing a puzzle. She would get out the vehicle puzzle and play with all the vehicles, get out the animal puzzle to play with the animals, etc. Kind of a multi-purpose toy that stores easily (and flat)!

We have this issue too - I would specifically tell people that you have very limited space so please no large gifts. My MIL is constantly buying DS ride-on toys and ball pits and all of this stuff that I have absolutely no space for!

Some stuff my 1 year old likes that don't take up much space are puzzles (the peg-style kind meant for toddlers), blocks (both the wooden type and the mega blocks, which are like huge legos...he is OBSESSED with those), and musical instrument type toys. And it sounds like you can probably swap out that jumperoo with something else pretty soon - maybe an activity table?

@MrsHoneyC: We have a small space too...I would suggest personalized items, like a book with photos of family members, like this one:
https://pinholepress.com/products/mini-book-of-names-faces-85-1-0-01/

Nesting blocks:
http://www.landofnod.com/tower-of-babble/f1247

Or how about a play tent that can be folded up, like to ones at ikea.

My 16 mo old loves anything with doors, to open and close open and close. So if you think you can fit one larger item, how about a low profile kitchen like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Hape-Creative-Cookery-Club-Educo/dp/B000A6L6WK/ref=pd_sim_t_22?ie=UTF8&refRID=0FPDHAQRXR8J7NGC9KV4

Blocks can take up very little space if stored in a box.
Big Magnets on your fridge (or freezer, or dryer, really anything magnetic).
Do you own your space? Paint a section of wall with chalkboard paint and chalk is great. Buy the big sidewalk kind if you're worried about eating it).

Bean turns 1 in december! one year old i cannot believe it! People have already started asking about what they can buy him for his birthday / christmas and i am stumped. I've attached a photo of his play area, i took a small corner of our livingroom to dedicate to him. We have a small living space and have to make the most of every square foot. I'm not sure which toys developmentally would be good for a 1 year old but in addition ones that would be well suited for a small space.

- i have nightmares of people buying him giant plastic play kitchens and 4 riding toys cluttering my livingroom. haha. Any mom favourites i can steer people towards when they ask me what he needs / wants for decemeber. I would appreciate any ideas.!
