@MrsHotDog: We've had this phase for about 6 months... and she's only 14.5 months now. Just recently, she's started to calm down while we do it, but it's because we talk to her through the whole thing. We tell her a few minutes before we're going to put her on the changing pad, and then we tell her to grab a toy she wants to play with (right now, the temporal thermometer works great). We let her put her diaper down and then we strap her in.

@MrsHotDog: I agree with what @Cole: and @Mrs. Yoyo: both said...give her a special toy and put her on the changing table so she knows it's a special time time/place. My LO is almost 17 months and we haven't hit this phase yet, but based on my friends...those who do diaper changes randomly all over the house have had the most trouble...those that always change their LO in a changing area have less issues...that's where they place the special diaper changing toys and that's the only time they get them... GOOD LUCK! Also, can't wait to hear about LO #2 :)

@MungBean: If the diaper doesn't go on just right while LO is standing up, you can fix it later when LO has calmed down!

Breaking it into a two step process (get it on in any way possible including standing up, then adjust it shortly later) made it a lot easier to get the job done!

My LO is only 13 months...so not quite at the hairy toddler stage, but getting there! I used to think that changing him on the floor would help but I resorted back to the changepad and he's been way better. When I sit him down I let him pick something to play with (lotion bottles, old pacis, etc.) then I sing songs while changing him. Most of the time it works, but I think what's worked best for us is not changing him in random places (specifically the floor where he can escape).

@MrsHotDog: Do you think she may be ready to try potty training? Has she shown an interest? Maybe she's just over diapers?

I don't have a toddler right now so I'm just throwing that out there! haha

I also agree with trying the toy thing. I let LO pick two of his Thomas trains to hold and make a big deal out of it. Then I just do it as quickly as possible. I actually still use the changing table most times to minimize the rolling-away factor.

I found that special toys just for the changing table work pretty well at this age- ok, by special toy I mean something they can't usually have like an old Comcast remote with the batteries taken out. They tend to be shocked enough that you gave it to them that it buys about twenty seconds :-) I also get them undressed before laying them down to put on a clean diaper, I still can't get them on right when they are standing.

These things come up as toddlers realize that they are separate beings with separate wants, ideas, and interests, but are still so often faced with needing adult assistance for so many things. CD standing up is hard. Give her as much choice as you can, and hang in. Have you started toilet learning? You could consider switching to cloth training pants that can be pulled up more like underwear. It might make things less of a struggle. Something like this; http://itsybitsybums.3dcartstores.com/Blueberry-Trainers_p_234.html ?

I have tried changing her standing up but that is hard for me when I have to snap her diapers since I CD. Hopefully this phase is short lived...she won't even settle down to look at my phone which is crazy.

I'm dealing w/this right now too :( I try changing her standing up but inevitably the diaper goes on crooked and it leaks all over the place. Sigh. Can't wait 'till she's a little older so I can at least *try* to reason w/her a bit!!

I change my son standing up, both for pee and poop if he's just in one of those moods.

I also use warm water on the wipes, sometimes he's freaking out about the coldness.

We deal with tantrums at diaper time sometimes too.

- Offer to let her pick where to lay down. Sometimes its in the living room or her bedroom.
- Threaten to buckle her up on the table (she hates this so sometimes she straightens up).
- Offer a paci/food/etc during the change.

About two weeks ago, another side of my daughter came out. She is 20 months old and throws a raging fit for half of her diaper changes. Screaming, crying, rolling over, kicking and clinging to me. I am noticing that it happens more when she is tired which is understandable but what can I do to curb this?! She gets so angry and almost starts to gag herself. I have tried being calm, I have tried throwing a fit with her (which does cut the complete breakdown time in half), letting her pick her diaper, and just taking off her diaper and letting her roam free. Some fits last up to 30 minutes and she gets mad about EVERYTHING I do, taking off her clothes, taking off her diaper, wiping her, and of course putting her diaper back on. Is this a terrible two's preview? I have a newborn coming in two weeks...I don't think I can handle all of this and I am starting to freak out. Thanks for reading this long post! I am willing to try any and every tip!
