If you have time, there are websites that cater to elementary school teachers. You know all of the fun stuff they use to decorate classrooms? I'm sure you could find precut shapes on one of those sites.

@MusicaV: Hmm, you could try a scrapbook store for cutouts, like @cole suggested. Or if you know someone that works at an elementary school, they usually have those machines. Or print out and cut them yourself.

What about a cork map that you can pin notes on (maybe on the places the guests would like to travel or have traveled) & frame? (I'm pretty sure you can order one off amazon too)

http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/luckies/product/cork-map-noticeboard

alot less DIY since you can pretty much just buy the board & frame!

@allison: I like your idea. The travel theme is fine, I just don't have anything else planned along the theme. Any idea where I can find pre-cut planes/boats/cars/trains?
@Cole: I like the star idea. The landmarks sound good, but I don't have time or patience to cut them. Any idea where to get pre-cut stars? I feel like I've seen them before, but I can't think of where.
@deerylou: Interesting idea about the postcards. I'll have to check my local thrift shops... I think I've seen some there.

How difficult would it be to obtain postcards from around the world? You could display them in an old fashioned piece of luggage or across twine with clothepins.

I love the globe idea! Hmmm...

Maybe, get a globe (or map if you'd prefer something you can frame & hang), print out the continents, cut them up almost like a puzzle (larger pieces, not so much small, into however many pieces needed), have your guests write their note, and then you can pin them on the area of the globe/map they go on.

Or you can do something like this:
http://endlesslyinspired.com/2013/07/24/peace-on-earth-globe-tutorial/
where you tape off lo's name/birthdate/age & have your guests sign the painted part kind of like @Arden: suggested!

What about a few landmark shaped papers, like the Eiffel tower, Empire State building, pyramids etc. for people to write on? You might be able to use a due cut machine at a scrap book store to do it. Prayer flags? You could also do stars, put up a big picture of earth and encourage people to hang their stars around it and for then to write their wishes on shooting stars?

I immediately thought of the earth with paper doll figures holding hands around it - I recall something like this on a classroom wall in elementary school.

What about getting a globe from a thrift store, painting it black or another color, and having people write their messages in paint pens.

The first thing that came to my mind when I read this was to have a big Earth on a board, with little airplanes for people to write the wishes on. You could also do boats/cars/etc? I know you said it wasn't travel-themed, though...

I'd like to do a variation on a wish tree for LO's 1st birthday party, but I'm stuck on how to accomplish it.

We have an around-the-world/international theme. At one point it was a travel theme, but there's nothing travel-related right now. We're having food from all over the world.

Ideally we would have some sort of decorative/shaped paper that guests would write on with well-wishes for LO, memories or stories from his first year. The problem is I don't know how to display them, or what shape/design for the papers to have.

I only have a week, and I don't want it to be labor-intensive. Help please!
