@simplyfelicity: I've been taking more over time...I think my body is getting used to it and it isn't working as well (or I am getting sicker?). I'm now taking about 1/4 of a pill (6mg) in the morning and again around 3pm. Then 3/4 of a pill before bed (~20mg). A couple nights I have taken a whole pill (25mg). I take 25mg of B6 2-3x per day. Hope you feel better. I am now 12 weeks and crossing my fingers that I'll start feeling better soon. With my daughter, I felt a lot better around 14-15 weeks, I think, so hoping for the same!

@78h2o: What dosage and how often do you take the Unisom and b6? I am going to take it when I get home from work today just to see how I function during waking hours with it. I totally hear you about the sleep! I was having insomnia (which I never do) and would be so sick. Thank goodness the unisom helps with that!

Late to the party! Sorry you are going through this!

Mine doesn't sound as bad as yours. I threw up all day for most of my pregnancy (both) and near the end it's just the mornings.

What helped me was consistently eating. When I felt like I was about to throw up... I would pop a snack in my mouth and that would subside the want to throw up.

When I was going through my GD course... as weird as it sounds some morning sickness troubles is usually cause by not eating enough. How illogical is that? Your body wants you to eat for the baby so to show you... it makes you throw up what is already in your body? So dumb! :)

Anyways that's all I have for you. I hope yours doesn't last all pregnancy!! Good luck girl!

@simplyfelicity: Unisom/B6 works better for me than Zofran. I still feel nauseous even when taking it round the clock, but I can still function and I don't get sick too often... a handful of times each week vs. 5-7x per day.

I'm sorry you aren't feeling well. :( It is such an awful feeling. The thing that helps me the most is sleep. The better I sleep, the less nauseous I feel. If I have a crappy night's sleep, I will be vomiting most of the next day, for sure. The next thing that helps me is eating frequent small meals. Also sour things...I like lemon Jolly Ranchers (Walgreens sells bags of lemon by itself), Lemon Heads, and Sour Patch kids, but only in moderation.

I kept a bag of Sour Patch Kids in my purse and ate a few whenever I felt queasy. The combination of sour and sugar really helps settle my stomach. It wouldn't stop the full blown barfies, but it definitely took the edge off. Good luck!

@simplyfelicity: I'm glad something helped!

Funny story for you. I've been taking Diclegis (contains b6 and Unisom) every night since 7 weeks. I am 15 weeks now and I've been feeling much better, hardly taking Zofran during the day (none yesterday!)

So last night I woke up at 4am and felt queasy after drinking a sip of water. I ran for the Zofran and I realized I had forgotten to take the Diclegis before bed (and my allergy meds and lexapro - oops!). I plan to keep taking it for a few more weeks just to be sure.

So, I tried the b6 and Unisom combo last night...I don't feel like crawling under my desk and crying! That's a win! I still feel wonky but it's totally manageable. I took Zofran this morning, too but I am sure I can attribute this to the Unisom since Zofran hasn't done much for me in the past.

I was saved by Izze. It's a drink, a sparkling juice (no sugar or anything else, just 100% juice with sparkling water) I got at Whole Foods. I would sip it throughout the day and the combination of fizz and light flavor settled my stomach so much. I couldn't drink plain water, but getting dehydrated made me more nauseated. The Izze worked wonders.

Biggest factor for me on whether I could manage the day was getting out of bed at the first sign of symptoms (usually around 4am) and eating something. Usually I had Puffins cereal with whole milk. And then continuing that all day long, any nausea - eat something, anything. The few times I tried to stay in bed an extra hour instead of getting up, I had to call out from work because I just couldn't get on top of the nausea. Learned that lesson quick.

I'd also avoid anyone or anything with fragrance, as much as possible. Held my breath around certain coworkers and on the subway. Carried something with my own scent (like a dirty tshirt or scarf) to sniff as needed. Sniffing an orange worked for me, too. Tried ginger capsules and Seabands but they didn't really help. Took 25mg B6 three or four times a day during the hardest weeks, I think it helped some.

It will lighten up eventually!

Mine wasn't too bad (never threw up) so I got by using seabands (they apply pressure to your wrists), sucking on hard ginger candies, and eating small amounts of crackers pretty often.

I have been taking Zofran and Diclegis as others have said. I also wear acupressure bands whenever I'm in the car.

Food tips: small meals, eat a snack every 2 hours, protein + carbs at meals. Middle of night or right before bed snack - toaster waffle or cereal bar. Sour dried fruit, gum, plain soda water if regular water makes you nauseated. I also had to stop eating cereal with milk, yogurt, and ice cream.

For constipation I've been mixing psyllium fiber with oatmeal in the morning.

I hope you find a combination that helps. Feel better

@simplyfelicity: Yep, the constipation was no joke but the lesser of two evils. I just took a ton of Colace (my doctor told me it isn't absorbed so you basically cannot take too much) and water. Honestly, when it got bad enough to outweigh the nausea I'd take a zofran break for a day or two. Those individually wrapped prunes helped too.

I had very very intense morning sickness starting at 6 weeks. By 12 I felt basically better, and by 14 weeks it was totally gone. Hang in there.

I echo the previous unisom and dissolvable Zofran suggestions. I found that I also need a few sips of Sprite or ginger ale before eating to settle my stomach.
My pockets were always full of lemon drops, granola bar, and crackers w peanut butter.

@simplyfelicity: This is what my OB prescribed me:
Zofran-8mg taken 3x a day for a total of 24mg. I called because I was vomiting uncontrollably and this is what she called in to the pharmacy.

Two days later, I can't keep water, let alone food in. They want me to come in the same day. They check my levels, weight, and said I have HG. Prescribed Diclegis DR 10mg four pills a day. Two at night, one in am, one in afternoon. This is to be taken in conjunction with my Zofran 3x a day. If I start feeling weak, I'm to go to the ER for an IV. But, a side effect of the pills is drowsiness sooooo yeah. I was told not to drive while on this cocktail.
ETA: all this happened at exactly 9weeks. I'm currently 11w2d, and still just as sick. She said symptoms should start to subside by week 11 after they peak at 9-10 weeks. If they don't, it may be because of HG. Hopefully, yours will wind down in a couple of weeks!

@simplyfelicity: Colace is a non-active laxative, so they work by sucking a bunch of water from your body into your colon to get things moving, The key to having colace work is to take it, drink a ton of water, try and walk around if possible as much as you can, and if that dose doesn't work wait however long you're supposed to and repeat, including the water. Eventually with the colace and water it will dislodge it all, but sometimes it takes awhile. The active laxatives work better because they cause your colon to contract, but that obviously is not optimal in the pregnant! With zofran I take regular colace and try to drink as much as I can, and it keeps it from getting too bad. And yeah, the weight gain from constant carb eating does suck, but it's better than the nausea, and you can always burn it off afterwards when you feel like a million bucks.

@Rockies11: That sounds so awful! I am pretty sure I don't have hypermesis because I can keep most food down, so I can't imagine going through all that. You have some great suggestions! I do get concerned about the horrible constipation. When I was pregnant before, my doctor only okay-ed of something called Colace, I believe and it did nothing. Like you said, I am more worried about weight gain than loss because I feel like I eat so much because it makes my nausea a little better. Hoping I can slow my roll in the second trimester.
Thanks for all your tips! Hope you are feeling much better these days.

@simplyfelicity: zofran you can take 20 mgs of a day. I take it paired with the other main morning sickness drug - Reglan, and that combo works well for me. Diclegis is basically unisom and b6. Eating a little bit frequently is proven to help as one theory of morning sickness is that your body confuses hunger with nausea. The other proven thing to work is ginger. I have hypremesis, with this pregnancy and my previous, so I have taken lots and lots of drugs and have no concerns about doing that! Zofran is super constipating - if you don't go for 3 days it's safe to take non-active laxatives (ones without senna). My other advice is to not worry about the healthiness of your diet or your weight gain (just weight loss) - by OB says babies are excellent parasites and almost all of the ladies in my hypremesis group have healthy, good sized babies despite extreme malnutrition!

@Little Misters Mom: Just read your ETA...how funny! We have actually nicknamed the baby Lil P (for parasite) because that's what it feels like (well, I am guessing. :silly: ) I anticipate, when the morning sickness subsides, we will call the baby Lil P (for sweet pea.) I joke that this has to be a girl because no way would a boy do this to his mother.
If this isn't too personal, did you find that much zofran to cause constipation?

@Little Misters Mom: I will do just that. So, take it right when I wake up? Also, I just ordered these. Thanks!

@gilmoregirl: I ordered some preggie pops off Amazon and DH is getting me some natural peppermint candy and jolly ranchers. If those don't work, I will definitely try the lemon drops.
Teaching + morning sickness is pretty awful (though I am sure being a nurse is even worse.) Luckily, I have an instructional aide with me 4 out of the 6 periods I teach, and she has been a life saver.
Eta: Oh and thank you for the advice!

Take the zofran before you feel sick. For me it didn't do much once I already felt bad, but it would ward it off. Never have an empty stomach, ever. I kept crackers and ginger snaps on the nightstand in case I woke up in the middle of the night and first thing in the morning.

Also, Preggie Pops helped me a lot. http://www.amazon.com/Three-Lollies-Preggie-Assorted-Sickness/dp/B005AYE8UE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1416184049&sr=8-2&keywords=preggie+pops

ETA: On those days when just nothing whatsoever helped I tried to take comfort in knowing that morning sickness is correlated to healthy pregnancies. So the crummier you feel, the stronger your little sweet pea! It really is so hard though. Good luck.

So, I took some Zofran and feel much better. I hadn't taken it in nearly a week so I guess I forgot that it helps. It doesn't make it go away completely but takes the edge off.
Thank you again for all your suggestions...I sent DH off with a long list to the store. :silly:

I took Unisom & B6 and Zofran at the same time. Half tab of Unisom before bed and 25 mg of B6 three times a day. I also had 8 mg of Zofran, which I only took once a day (which was partly because I didn't get it until 16 weeks and I was a little better then, and partly because of the side effects).

I always heard mint & ginger were helpful, but I actually found citrus to be the best. I'm a teacher, so nausea plus high school students got rough at times, and lemon drops, life savers and jolly ranchers got me through some tough afternoons. Also I drank a lot of lemonade and sprite.

Sometimes spicy cinnamon gum took the edge off too.

No matter what, it is so, so tough. Hope you can get some relief soon.
