we have a miele polaris and love it. definitely an investment, but so worth it. so well made, compact, light (compared to other vacuums), quiet and powerful.

We have a Dyson animal. Some of our friends are highly allergic to cats (we have 2). When we use the Dyson before they come over, they never have allergy symptoms.

We have a dyson and its great... But we heard that for the price range its in, miele is a better brand to go with. Dont know anyone with a miele though ... My only complaint about the dyson is the attachments are kind of awkward to use

LOVE our Dyson upright! We have a Newfoundland dog and a long haired cat, and it more than keeps up with them. I use the mini turbine head on the stairs, but I don't find the Dyson too heavy at all (and I have an old one - it is about 7 years), my sisters new one is far lighter so I can't see how it would be too heavy for stairs. Mine has had no issues with loss of suction or broken parts in the 7 years I have owned it.

I think the most important thing is that you get one with a motorized head!! This is the KEY!!

I want a Dyson, but right now we're using a Bissell pet vacuum (don't know what it's actually called and it's a few years old so it's probably not on the market anymore). We bought it for less than $150 and no complaints so far - it gets all the Golden Retriever fur out of our carpet, and we've had it for at least 4 years without any malfunction.

We have the Dyson animal and absolutely love it. Great for two shedding dogs. That being said if I could choose again I would get this version http://www.english.dysoncanada.ca/store/product.asp?product=DC37-IRSRIRPU
My sister has this one and I think it blows the stand up out of the water! Easier to use and much lighter. It has a special indent for the turbine to sit well on the stairs.

Something I remembered from when I was looking to replace my Dyson, and was reminded of after reading these responses. For the money, I wouldn't say Dyson is the best option. It gets advertised a lot, but if you're going to spend several hundred dollars on a vacuum there are better performing brands out there. Also, it has a tendency to blow around anything in its vicinity, so if anyone has allergies you will be kicking up dust/hair!

We have a regular Dyson ball with three hairy animals and haven't had any problems. We replaced a Miele with the Dyson four years ago and never looked back. In fact the Dyson arrived right after I vacuumed with the Miele and I filled the Dyson canister even though I had JUST finished vacuuming with the old one.

We have a Dyson Animal, which works really well, but it got too heavy for me to carry up the stairs while I was pregnant. So we decided to get a lightweight vaccuum, as well, and now I use the lightweight more often than the Dyson! The vaccuum is the Shark Navigator. It's cheap (I think around $100?) and has great suction on both the carpets and hardwood floors. Plus, it's really lightweight, and I have no issues hauling it around.

We have a Bissell Powergroom Pet Compact-We have had it for about 3 years and its by far the best vacuum I've ever owned. I have a 7 year old Lab who sheds constantly and most vacuums I buy lose suction after about 6 months-this one still still picks up everything!! We have hardwoods, but have a braided jute rug that has to be vacuumed daily (for maintenance to keep it looking new) and it literally gets every hair out of the crevices.

The bonus-its only about $60. My mother in law was shopping for a vacuum and was thinking about the dyson (she has two little cavalier king charles pups that shed like its their job) and I convinced her to just try the bissell-I mean for $60 bucks what do you have to lose? She was impressed.

We have a Kirby. And, while expensive, it is by far the best vacuum I've ever used. It also works as a shop vac, wet vac, hardwood floor cleaner, baseboard cleaner, etc. It comes with a million attachments that basically allow you to do anything and everything. And it gets up ALL the pet hair.

I have a love/hate relationship with my Dyson. It lost suction pretty quickly even though we cleaned the filter regularly, and even though we have a relatively lightweight version it's SO HEAVY to carry up and down stairs - we don't wear shoes either, and I'm always afraid I'm going to slip and fall carrying it! I've resorted to using a handheld Dyson (yes, love/hate) for edges and fur tumbleweeds. Next time I'm getting a Miele!

Oh, and the button that turns the carpet brush on/off broke pretty quickly too, which is a huge minus because we have wood floors and I have to turn the brush off as soon as I turn the vacuum on. :(

I love my vacuum! we have a Hoover platinum. I think the only situations it wouldn't be good for would be if you had carpeted stairs, but you could use the small one for that. We like the small one for bringing out to vac the cars too. My mom & I both like my Hoover better than her dyson. It's lighter, quieter, and it's easier to put attachments on the little vac then it is to put them on her dyson. You can't put attachments on the Hoover, but that's what the lil one it comes with is for.

I will have to follow this. We have the bagless dirt devil and it was good for the first year but I've noticed this year it doesn't pick up nearly as much dirt as it should.

My nanny family has the shark, and they have a crazy shedding dog too and they LOVE it. Said it makes such a difference so we're looking into that one.
