@Umbreon: You are more prone to them right after having had one due to the swelling issue @lilyofthewest: mentioned. I would recommend being extra vigilant in the few days after it is resolved. Maybe go to bed with a heating pad set on a timer on your chest (the heat will help a lot to prevent them overnight) and do not sleep on your side or stomach (side sleeping always made me more prone to them).

I also had horrible GI issues with sunflower lecithin. Soy lecithin was better for me (basically same thing) and I only took it while I had a clog to help get it out. But doesn't hurt to try.... as it works for lots of people

@Umbreon: there is a lot of supply and demand happening as well. For the engorgement, I think it’s fine to just release some of the milk for comfort. I think your supply should balance out soon. Some people are prone to plugged ducts and the lecithin night help you

@Umbreon: I had major supply issues once my
Daughter started sleeping through the night. I did a lot of powerpumping in and evenings and I started setting an alarm to pump at 4am. Omg that was painful to wake up when my baby was sleeping through the night. It was totally worth it, because I would have dried up at 4 months if I hadn’t done anything, and in the end I breastfed my daughter for 12 month and pumped enough to have milk til she’s 18 months. After I got my supply figured out, I pumped once a day at 10pm, but I was doing it to maintain my supply, not for engorgement or mastitis.

@Eebolleh: usually I am.enjoying the sleep though. I would rather not set an alarm to pump but maybe it's better than the alternative. But then do I wean myself from having to do that?

@lilyofthewest: that's what I am hoping was the issue. Otherwise it was 6+ weeks between each side. (Wow where does the time go!)

When they happen back-to-back it can be that the inflammation and swelling from the first time made it easier to recur (because narrowed/distorted duct made it harder to empty). So unfair.

I had a chronic problem with this. I took a ton of sunflower lecithin capsules regularly and the problem solved immediately with no impact on baby's digestion.

@LemonJack: I will look into that! I guess it was 6 weeks in between each breast, but still, I don't want it to happen again.

@pachamama: good to know, I'll keep in mind the GI issues. If these are being caused by him eating less frequently, I guess there's nothing I can really do? Other than maybe try the lecithin.

@meadow: I am. I have a few nursing bras that have no wire.

@Eebolleh: thanks. I don't have an electric toothbrush, but I've been having a few baths per day. I submerge it in the hot water, massage and express. It seems to be working. I no longer have a fever. But I can still feel clogs so I'll keep working at it

You want to massage the duct away from the nipple (because things are clogged, you want to back it up). Also get lots of heat on the area and use an electric toothbrush on the area a few times per day.

Oh dang, I had this happen too! as your supply regulates and babies go longer between feedings clogged ducts can happen. Try to massage in the shower with conditioner on wide-tooth comb, like brush it. It sounds like he's eating enough! You can also get on all 4s and let gravity help. Weird but it definitely works.
Also the lecithin can cause some major GI issues!! I didn't tolerate it well.

I had a few clogged ducts with DD1, and I was told that Lecithin can be taken daily and helps prevent them. I bought it at Walgreens, and I never had another one. I used it for the first three months with DD2 and never had a clogged duct. It’s definitely worth a try!

I had a plugged duct about 6 weeks ago. I felt horrible, had a fever but doctor sent me home saying it was just clogged and not mastitis. I felt better for about a day and it came back. A.day after that I felt fine.

Now it happened again on the other side last week. This time it lasted a little longer (2 days) but I didnt go to the doctor because I had the same symptoms as last time. Now a week later, it's happening again in the same breast. Could this just be left over from last week? Am I doing something wrong?

My baby is almost 13 weeks, has been going longer between feeds. Could this be contributing? I get a low-grade fever with these clogs, and it makes me feel awful. Luckily, I caught this one early, and I'm hoping I can work it out before the fever hits.

Any tips? I stopped wearing a bra to bed. How do I tell if he's finished off the breast? Sometimes he pulls his head back to unlatch. Sometimes he falls asleep. The breast will feel soft, but does that mean it's empty? I'm just so sick of this!

I don't think it's his latch, I had multiple lactation Consultants take a look at his latch in the early days and they said it look good. Also at his 2-month vaccination, I fed him in the room and the doctor commented that his latch look good. But can they really tell? He's gaining a lot of weight so there's no issue there.

Maybe it's just bad luck?
