I've had a ton of plugged ducts in the last 3 mos...once you feel the lump massage massage massage!!! Fill an old sock with rice and pop it in the microwave for 30 secs and apply to the sore area. Also helps to start nursing from that side since LOs suck is stronger then. Feel better!

Ugh, I'm just getting over this. My plugged ducts became mastitis and I ended up with chills and a good fever. I didn't pay enough attention when I had plugged ducts. What works for me is a heating pad, and lots of nursing and pumping, and a nice long hot shower while massaging the boobies. I hope you start feeling better soon.

@Kemma: Thanks! LO is not into dangle nursing haha but I am trying dangle pumping!

@LittleGBee: See, LO fusses when she nurses anyway because of my low supply, so it's hard for me to tell. I am pumping about the same amount. The area is still very sore & I still feel swollen :( I will try the products you suggested!

@daniellemybelle: I've struggled with clogged ducts and mastitis so much lately. So painful and such a bummer! My boob normally hurts for a day or two after the clogged duct clears, and I only know that it's cleared by the way my son reacts at the breast. If he's no longer frustrated, I can tell that it's mostly cleared.

Clogged ducts can lead to mastitis, but won't necessarily. In addition to doing all the things these lovely ladies have already suggested try to get a ton of rest to stave off a potential infection. I've had great luck with Earth Mama Angel Baby Booby Tubes, and Wishgarden's Happy Ducts tincture whenever I feel a clogged duct coming on.

I hope you feel better soon!!

@daniellemybelle: have a go at dangle nursing or pumping as gravity can often help clear a clogged duct! Nursing with baby's chin towards the clog can also help.

Hope you feel better soon!!

Thanks everyone. It does feel more bruised than anything but I can feel lumps deep inside. My MIL is in town so I have been out & about, and not able to pump or even empty when nursing because LO doesn't nurse well when we are out. I am really sore :( but I'm going to go pump right now.

As others have said, you probably still have some clogged ducts left. I'm super prone to them and it sucks. And I pump all the time to empty my boobs!!! Ugh! After you pump, you could try massaging/squeezing your boobs (hand express) the remaining milk to make sure it's empty empty. I found this really helps!

if it is still swollen (i.e. a lump) and painful, you probably still have some clogged duct left. keep nursing/pumping with massage and warm compress. i used a rice sock (rice in a clean sock, microwave), which seemed to hold the heat better than other methods.

if there is no lump, but it feels like a bad bruise...then it might just be an infection (maybe bacteria from LO's mouth entered in through a duct), which could turn into mastitis. for that one, i just used a warm compress all day and no massage (as per my doctor's recommendation, though she was my general physician and i'm not sure if that was right). i have had both happen to me.

Mastitis comes on like a bad cold or the flu. I would try hot compresses and massing while nursing/pumping. Hope you feel better!

Sounds like just a clogged duct. You'll know once you have mastitis because of the fever and chills. Try a little Epsom salt soak each time before you pump. It helps clear the ducts, and I'm usually able to get rid of a clog after a pump or two.

Ugh. Why do I have to deal with this AND low supply? LO has not been emptying me well lately & since we already supplement I just let her have her bottle when she starts to fuss. I pump after nursing when I can but it's usually only once or twice a day.

Last night my right breast became very hot & tender, with soreness up by my armpit. I decided to be proactive & have her nurse that one side for about 40 minutes with a hot compress & lots of massage. The hot, swollen feeling subsided & I felt very empty and not so lumpy.

This morning (she STTN about 7 hrs & I didn't get up to pump because everything you read says rest is important) the clogged area is swollen & painful again. I am pumping right now & with every suction that area hurts, though it is a dull pain. I'm wondering if I am just bruised from such vigorous massage? Should I be worried about mastitis if I don't feel sick?
