@gotkimchi: @Cole: they didn't give me a ton of information over the phone and i didn't really know what questions to ask.
i looked LO's shot record and he got prevnar as a baby, so that make sense to give him pneumovax to build antibodies. I did ask if this was because he got pneumonia last year--and she said, not necessarily but it would make sense that he was so susceptible to getting it because he didn't have the antibodies.

it's crazy though because since he was an infant, whenever he would get sick he would come down with something FAST. As in I would drop him off at daycare completely fine and normal and they'd call me an hour later and he would have a high fever, rash, etc.

Are they doing pneumovax to determine if he effectively builds antibodies? This is often a first line test for immune deficiencies. I believe it has a "side effect" frequently of actually boosting the immune system by causing the body to create more IGG (I could be wrong, it might be IGA). I think I would ask either way if they will draw titers again after the pneumovax just to be sure his body is reacting appropriately. My sister has an immune deficiency (cvid) and I had a pregnancy induced version so I'm happy to chat if that's the direction they are looking. My doctor gave me pneumovax to make sure I was building antibodies and I did get a boost in my immune system too as a result.

Pneumovax (ppsv23) can be used down to age 2. How old is lo? Prevnar or pcv13 is the one kids get as babies. Prevnar covers 13 strains while pneumovax covers 23 strains. So I'd say if they're trying to give him better coverage this seems reasonable

We took my LO to an allergist because he has constant sinus infections. They did a scratch test and DH and I were shocked when he didn't react to a thing. The allergist wanted blood work done and the results came back that generally kids have 14 pneumonia titers and he only has 4.

So, we have to go get an specialized vax because even though he is vax'ed against pneumonia, LO isn't immuno-compromised which could be why LO is sick so often. We'll go back for another blood draw about a month after the vax to see if he has more titers.

Has anyone has experience with something like this?

No vax debates please! :-)
