@DesertDreams88: Not sure if this helps, but I was 12 weeks and they weren't concerned about loss or damage to the baby. When I was admitted my oxygen levels were "dangerously low" according to them, but when I asked if I should be worried about the baby having enough oxygen they just kind of brushed it off. They had my OB come and check but she just listened to the heart and didn't seem that worried either. Mostly they were worried about me and I did feel quite awful. But baby was fine, there were no other complications, and is a perfectly wonderful 3 year old now.

@mrsbubbletea: I agree - I think it's like when you call the damned nurses line for an opinion on how serious something is and they tell you they can't be sure unless you're seen. Everything is about liability.

@DesertDreams88: I would probably still go and just be slightly more cautious, but I've never had illness-related loss so I obviously can't say how I would react in that situation. In general, though, I think the antibiotics will have done their magic.

@DesertDreams88: ugh your update is so irritating. I think that both the "advice nurses" that you talked to were really just not sure and told you the most cautious scenario because they wanted to be safe. If he is contagious still, it's going to be spread through coughing and potentially surfaces. So just wash the heck out of your hands, and try to keep a 3-6ft distance when at all possible. I hope you can still enjoy the visit.

@DesertDreams88: personally, I would still go and just take precautions (own room, hand washing, no kisses/hugs). It is my understanding that pneumonia is usually a byproduct of a different illness (especially if your mom and Gpa were sick with the same illness but didn’t develop pneumonia!) But keep in your own personal comfort level, of course! If you’re going to have anxiety the whole time then it’s prob not worth it. I always tell myself that I’m exposing myself to more risk by going to Walmart or eating in a busy restaurant!

@bees_knees: My father, and family, is one that takes pride on "pushing through" illness and doesn't think about the risk to others :( He already flew across the country, had 7 nights of hotels and a car rental reservation all lined up, and a whole week of family plans. Currently the whole CT family is hanging out without me, in my state (AZ). He is spending time with my 2 aunts and cousins, and my mom.

When I spoke to him on the phone very briefly, he was hoarse but didn't cough. I texted him earlier asking how his symptoms were, specifically coughing, and he said "it's fine considering I was just on a plane with dry air."

My dad's dr said he isn't contagious but my dad was unclear with me about whether or not he specifically told the dr he's be around a pregnant, anemic woman.

@DesertDreams88: if he’s contagious until he finishes the whole course of antibiotics...then shouldn’t HE be staying home (and not exposing the world?) I’m guessing he’s fine. What does his dr say? He would know the most about your dad’s specific illness/treatment.

Just bumping for more updates and maybe more insights.... I called my OB at 8a & 3p yesterday, both times asked the office to speak to someone directly, both times had to leave a voicemail because the nurse was with patients. Today I called back at 11:30 and asked the office to please, please get me through to someone. They got me through to a person I never had spoken to before, and she seemed hesitant because "the nurse never got back to me yesterday, and I wanted to confirm with her" .... implying she wasn't an official nurse?? Anyway, she told me to stay away from him until he's done with his antibiotics, which would be AFTER his trip (10 day course).

So I also called my GP's office which is a large set of physicians I see interchangeably. The person I spoke to had to flag down the last nurse before she was going on break, and relayed my questions/concerns (so I didn't talk to the nurse directly). She said it was a flat-out no until he's done with antibiotics.

This conflicts with what my pediatrician told me for my child, and what Dr. Google says - 24-48 hours after starting antibiotics.

ETA: I called the Healthy Pregnancy program nurse line (part of my insurance) and they said they'd err on the side of caution because I'm immunocompromised due to pregnancy and anemia, and they did not recommend seeing my father.

ETA 2: I called the general nurse line through MyUHC, and they said he should be fine after 48 hours of antibiotics.

UGH. This totally sucks. My family (extended and main) is NOT going to understand. And I WANT to spend time with my parents, I've been looking forward to this for 6 months. UGH.

@MommySLP: @MrsF: @misolee: @jape14: @littlebug: thank you for sharing your personal experiences, which were reassuring.

We decided to stay home from the Grand Canyon portion of the trip (Mon-Wed)- I'm disappointed but I go yearly, and the 4 hour drive with them plus a toddler wouldn't be fun, and DH & ILs were worried about LO not staying in the stroller around the edges, so maybe this is a blessing in disguise. My parents are still going with my 2 aunts, so it's not a huge loss for them. We will see them for some of the day, outside, on Thursday and then all day Fri-Sun, and we did get separate hotel rooms. Thursday morning will be 6 days of antibiotics, so, it should be fine by then according to Dr. Google.

I left a VM with my OB's nurse line at 8:30am and never got a call back, despite me calling twice to follow up :(

I was going to say the same as @MrsF: I'm a hospital social worker and was in/out of rooms with pneumonia throughout both of my pregnancies. I'd maybe get my own hotel room (mostly because I'd be worried his coughing might keep me up at night), but otherwise would have no worries about spending time with him.

My toddler had pneumonia when I was about 5/6 months pregnant and neither his pediatrician nor my OB was overly concerned about me catching it. I kept him home from school/nanny and he basically laid on top of me for three days and I was fine. I would think it'd be even less of a concern with an adult who knows how to wash his/her hands, blow his nose on his own, presumably is not attempting to wear your skin as sick toddlers like to do, etc.

My toddler was diagnosed with pneumonia earlier on in my current pregnancy. We actually didn’t take him to the doctors for him to be diagnosed until much later bc he only had fever symptoms. So who knows how long my toddler had it before he finally started meds. I told my ob about it and while she did say it is serious during pregnancy, they weren’t overly concerned with me catching it at that point nor were they concerned with me “avoiding” my son or anything like that.

i’m an RN in a busy ICU and take care of patients with pneumonia every day. I have 3 kids and have worked through each of my pregnancies with no issues and no concerns from my OB. Pneumonia is usually a bacterial infection or inflammation after someone has had a virus. Obviously everyone has their own comfort level, but I would go.

So the only more information I have is that my dad is on amoxicillin and he thinks the dr diagnosed it as bacterial based on bloodwork.

And I can accept that it might not be very contagious at this point to "normal" people, but I think it still sounds risky for a pregnant woman with anemia, which is two risk factors for catching it according to Dr. Google.

@2littlepumpkins: I would agree with you on that in almost any other circumstance, cause I'm generally not that worried about getting sick. But I went from having a cough in the morning that wasn't bad enough to worry me, to heading to the ER that night because I couldn't breathe and my oxygen levels were "dangerously low" So pneumonia while pregnant terrifies me.

@JennyPenny: that is my understanding of pneumonia as well.. but for me, for that reason I don't worry too much about it being contagious. Especially if he has been on meds since Thursday. I mean I'd probably wash hands and stuff more often but I don't think I'd skip the visit altogether.. could just be me though.

I was hospitalized when I got pneumonia while pregnant. I wouldn't chance it. My understanding is that pneumonia is a complication from bacterial or viral infections, so while "pneumonia" isn't contagious, the source of the original infection is.

@DesertDreams88: take this with a grain of salt because I'm not a medical professional whatsoever--but I had a similar situation when I was pregnant this past spring. We had a big trip planned to visit relatives & my uncle (who we were staying with) got pneumonia. He started meds Tuesday & we went Saturday. My OB told me as long as he didn't have a fever and had been on meds at least 24 hours I was fine to go. Of course I took extra precautions and didn't hug him or drink after him of course. He also was careful to wash hands, etc. I was 21 weeks at the time. But if you aren't comfortable and will worry about it the whole time, I would at least not share a room with them.

I have about 5 minutes to write this post so here's the quick version. My long-distance parents are coming TOMORROW to visit us for a week for a family wedding on Thursday. We only see each other twice a year. For this week, about half of the days we are sleeping in separate locations, but the other half we are sharing a hotel room. We planned to spend all of our time together - aquarium, Sedona, Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, wedding festivities, etc.

Turns out my father has had pneumonia since TUESDAY and went to the Dr on THURSDAY and they just told me TODAY (SUNDAY) at 4pm. He had a chest xray and blood workup to diagnose it. The dr "said it's not contagious" and he's on some kind of prescription (I will try to find out more). Thing is, my mom and my grandpa had it about 2 weeks ago, so I'm sure they passed it to him, so, it obviously is contagious to an extent.

My toddler is fully vaxxed which include the main pneumonia virus. BUT I am 20 weeks pregnant, and my husband has a horrible immune system as it is, and I don't know if babies were vaxxed against this in the 80s/90s (when we were kids)?

I can't call my OB or ped until tomorrow, and I hope they are open (Columbus Day). I have/had a ton of pregnancy/loss anxiety related to illness in the 3rd trimester and the newborn stage and my mom knows this. My cousin had two stillbirth in the past 2 years and I have PCOS & IF on both sides and I just can't deal with this info very well.

Anyone have any personal experience with pneumonia & pregnancy? I haven't had any time to do research, I found out at 4 and I am supposed to be at my neighbors house in 3 minutes at 4:30.
