Thanks! I had read a lot about this and learned about how interventions can effect the baby before my son was born. I desperately wanted to avoid all interventions, but that wasn't how my labor turned out.

I was in labor for several days and had maybe 7 or 8 IV bags throughout. I also had an epidural (for the last 4 hours or so) and my son passed all of his meconium so he had to be deep suctioned immediately after birth. They even warned me that he might not latch because of that! However... I had zero problems breastfeeding. My son never even lost weight!

I don't know what to make of it all. I guess we just get as much information as we can and try to avoid interventions, but ultimately we just don't know how things are going to turn out. It's sort of like our first lesson as moms ;)

I haven't had a chance to listen to the podcast, but I definitely agree with taking into account the amount of IV fluid received before birth when determining how much weight a baby loses in the first few days after birth. I received a ton of fluid prior to my daughter's birth, and then she dropped a significant amount of weight. I had to pump and then force a bunch of breast milk into my daughter right before they weighed her so that the hospital pediatrician would deem that she gained enough weight to be released. She was perfectly healthy, and there was no reason for her to remain hospitalized. It was so unnecessarily stressful.

I wish more women knew about this! The ways that various interventions can effect breastfeeding is huge, and I think that people totally don't know about them. I had a traumatic birth and a baby in the nicu, but I was really lucky and had a lot of support and information so we were able to establish a successful breastfeeding relationship with a little work. I read about women getting derailed by small things that just snowball and it breaks my heart!

I listened to a really interesting podcast on birth interventions and breastfeeding last night. (Side note: it was NOT about whether or not to have interventions, it was just a discussion about interventions and their relation to early breastfeeding)

I had a slew of interventions and a lot of breastfeeding troubles, so it was interesting to hear about some of the suggested correlations. I took a lot of IV fluids because of my high blood pressure and epidural. Some studies suggest that it might be better to wait to weigh the baby until 24 hours after birth so get a more accurate birth weight once the baby has had time to eliminate some of the fluids that they may have absorbed during the birth.

Our hospital/pediatrician was already having me supplement heavily with formula before we even walked out the door because of her rapid weight loss (even though they were "pro-breastfeeding" and encouraged rooming in, skin to skin, etc.). I wonder if it was related to all the fluids I received. I've struggled with low milk supply for all of our breastfeeding relationship, and I keep finding more and more possible explanations for what went on in the beginning to cause it.

Anyway, I thought it was quite interesting! Here's the link if anyone else wants to listen:
