Here is a good page to learn a little more about the different types of cameras and some suggestions for which models to look at.

@MACSUNSHINE: I really love our Sony DSC-RX100 point and shoot. The photos are great quality, it shoots really well in low light, and it's much more compact than a DSLR (which I know I would never carry around with me). With the Sony I can (and do) stick it in even a small purse and always have it with me. I find the quality to be better than phone photos.

In my opinion as long as you have a newer phone that has a good camera in it most point and shoots are going to be just as good. Do some research on photography with phones and there are settings and tricks to get good photos nearly all the time with a phone.

To get a point and shoot that's going to be considerably better then a phone camera you're going to spend atleast 200+ and you can get entry level DSLRs around 400. (watch for deals and used ones) and using the DSLR is where you really are going to see quite a difference in photos from a technology stand point.

And besides you always have your phone with you already and are you going to want to carry around a P/S all the time?

We have the Ricoh GR, and it's the perfect point and shoot for us. If you're handy with DSLR settings, you can achieve that with this camera as well. We have taken great photos with it, and it's comparable to our DSLR (that currently sits on the shelf because it's too big to carry around with two kids).

Definitely upgrade! I wish we used our DSLR more, but it's so bulky. I want to get a new point-and-shoot to tote around.

Thank you all! It is one of those items that I am hesitant to spend money on but I also don't want only iPhone pictures all the time. Some researching to do!

I agree with @Purpledaisy! We just bought the Sony A6000 and I love it. It's super light and easy to use. Not sure what your budget is, but Best Buy is running a deal for the camera and 2 lenses for 699. Highly recommend.

@Synchronicity: Ditto, the G16 is a great camera! I use it more than my DSLR.

I'd highly recommend my Sony mirrorless. They are comparable to a dslr but much smaller and lighter.

Id totally recommend upgrading before baby comes. I wish that I had!

canon S120 (if you don't want a lot of zoom) but want pocketability. I have the canon S90 and its terrific; it is the predecessor from a few years ago.
or canon SX530 if you'd like more zoom (but a larger form factor). still smaller than a DSLR though.

I think micro 4/3rds would be overkill.

We are debating whether we should upgrade our camera before baby arrives. We both primarily use our iPhones these days but recognize that the print quality is not the greatest with the iPhone.

Any recommendations? Looking for something that would allow us to have better print quality (nothing larger than an 8x10 probably) and for photo calendars/books etc. Thoughts on whether it is worth it or not. I know a DSLR would not be fully utilized.
