I'm not at all a photographer, but i recently got this one and absolutely LOVE it. http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_elph_320_hs

i found a great deal from an online electronics store so i definitely paid under $200 for it even though it was pretty new at the time. I really love the wifi capability so i can just upload pics seamlessly to my tablet, and i love that the auto mode takes great pics but i can also experiment with the manual settings as i learn more.

I have a slightly older model of this camera and I really like it - http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_sx280_hs

It's pretty little, and it has easy automatic modes as well as more advanced manual features. You can learn to shoot in manual modes (if you want) or you can just shoot in automatic mode. I'm not much of a photographer, but I love that I can put this camera in aperture priority mode and get the blurred background pictures that I love.

@Maysprout: My hubby & I are professional photographers, and we finally bought a point and shoot this year (we were tired of lugging heavy equipment on hikes). We went with the Canon s100. It's described as the worlds best pocket camera. It's amazing, and I think within your price range. The photo and video quality is great. I think you'd love it!!

My camera went kaput, it was just a simple point and shoot, so I'm looking to buy a new camera. I don't know all that much about photography but I do take a lot of pictures of LO and we do go on some fun trips so it's nice to have decent pictures.

Anyone have any camera recommendations or opinions on point and shoot vs the slightly fancier cameras. I'd probably get last years model if I went the fancier route to cut down on costs, I really don't want to spend more than $350 and to spend $350 it'd really have to be worth it.
