I've actually read that you can't spread the rash to other parts of your body. Sometimes the rash just takes longer to show up in different spots. You CAN, however, keep getting it if there's still oil from the plant on anything (like clothing, gloves, door handles, etc). So make sure to clean everything well.

Last summer, when I was pregnant, I got a poison sumac rash and didn't want to take any strong medications. I found a homeopathic poison ivy remedy at my local health food store that I think worked! The owner told me a lot of yard workers will take it as a preventative.

@T.H.O.U.: Oops! sorry -- just saw this. I meant a course of steroids that you get via Rx from your doctor. We get it soooo badly that it's really the only way to treat it.

My husband is exceptionally sensitive to poison ivy. His main remedy is to recognize exposure and jump into the shower within 20 - 30 minutes. (He scrubs his skin with Fels Naphtha, which is kind of an old wive's tale. This is a bar laundry soap that can be found in the detergent aisle. We also use it for our laundry.)

After that, it is all symptom management. Calamine lotion and over the counter anti-itch creams (usually has some sort of corticosteroid in them) until it runs it's course. If it is really, really bad, you may need to go to the doc for a steroid shot, or prescription strength cream/pills.

@T.H.O.U.: thankfully I only have a little patch on my ankle. It looks like it blistered really fast but so far I have cleaned it and put hydrocortisone on it.

@MrsH: oh no!! This is no fun and now it's on my stomach. I got some stuff from the pharmacy that has calamine in it that definitely sooths the itch. I havnt shaved my legs because I don't want it spreading there. My husband said I can expect to have it for 2-3 weeks!! I'm already a week out and it's still really itchy. Let me know if you find any good remedy.

I've actually heard that breastmilk works well on that. Otherwise, an oatmeal bath helps calm it. And try using calamine lotion.

I think I have poison oak or something on my arms. It itches so bad! Any good ideas on how to treat? I'm already scratching so bad it's spreading.
