@Boogs: this doesn't sound that "out there" to me for a public school. I think I'd be upset to not have a note from the teacher if this was my child, but I can see how it might have slipped through the cracks of the day. Policies like @Mamaof2: posted are standard in most schools I've worked, but deal only with the aggressor. I think the classroom teacher dropped the ball a little by not writing you a note to explain what happened, but Kinder classrooms are so busy I can see how it would get forgotten. Plus, she wasn't actually there, so the note would have probably told you less information than you got from your son.
Since no adult at the school can legally give you any specifics about the other child anyway, for good reason, if your son wasn't injured enough to need medical care I can see why no one in the office would call you.

@looch: I'm interested also. Sounds like this kid does have multiple victims. Out of control at this age, in my opinion.

@kiddosc: I'm wondering myself, and I'll definitely find out. They seem unwilling to share how the other child was "taken care of" but I would like to know that my child's safety is being taken seriously and what to do make it know this behavior won't be tolerated.

@Mamaof2: I'm still livid today, to be honest. Don't you know they would call me with a quickness if my kid had an I excused absence because his butt wasn't in a chair making them money... I also appreciate how clear your policy is. What isn't clear, and doesn't seem to be clear in many of these cases, is what are polices for victims, not just aggressors?

I'd be really interested to hear their response. I would expect to hear from the school any time my child was in the principal's office. It makes me wonder if the other child's parents are being made aware of his behavior.

@DesertDreams88: To go further, so I understand then...in order for it to be considered repeated behaviour, does it need to be on the same victim?

Our school district policy is written for bullying, but when I tried to search for hitting, I came up empty.

@looch: Bullying is defined as repeated verbal or physical agression, key idea is that it is repeated over and over. So, hitting in and of itself is not bullying. But if this child has had multiple incidents already with only a couple months into the school year, then yes, that would be bullying. Most of the schools I'm familiar with and the trainings that I have attended has used those guidelines.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Exactly! I got what I felt like was a pretty clear picture, but I still have questions!

@looch: It isn't specified in the handbook.

Once DH got home late last night I had him sit with me and we sent an email to the teacher and principal. First thing this morning as we were trying to get out the door, I was left a voicemail from the teacher, even though she wasn't at work today. It's the principal I really can't wait to hear back from.

My DCP had an entire section on hitting and biting. They inform the parent.

@Boogs: I would be upset hearing about it from my child first. Sounds like he remembers it pretty clearly, but can you imagine how you would feel if you didn't get what felt like the entire story?!

@Andrea: @Pancakes: @DesertDreams88: @808love: He's ok, but it's more the point of the thing. From what my LO says the principal said to the other child, "...you know we've talked about this before..." I'm appalled no one told me since 2 teachers and 1 principal knew about it. And even more appalled that no one saw it happening and this child has a pattern of this behavior. LO said he ran towards yard duties and that it when kid finally stopped. Then as soon as the bell rang he told his teacher, who took him to the other child's teacher, to point out who did it, so they could all go to the office.

Oh no!!!! Especially with a young child like yours, a phone call to parents is absolutely necessary.
ETA: Explanation from school should be requested. If not simply overlooked, possibly administrator was absent, teacher was supposed to follow up or perhaps whole story was not found out by the school.

I got a call from the nurse right after a boy hit my daughter. The nurse checked her out for any signs of injury (none). The teacher also wrote me a note that I saw once DD got home.

Parent gets a call within 24 hours. Sometimes that is the next day. At my school we can't just send up students to the office unless it is a very violent fight / requires a nurse visit. Most of the time we separate & talk to the students, have them write statements ( usually in another room), then we write office referrals, submit them to the office, and then the kids get discipline the next day usually with the phone call happening then.

What is your school's policies on kids hitting, slapping, and punching each other?

Do they have any policies in place with communicating things with parents?

My son was involved in an incident today that required a trip to the office with another child and I'm pretty upset I heard from my child about what happened, but no one called, emailed, or pulled me to the side to discuss the issue with me! So, I'm curious how other schools handle these things.
