I have always been pretty liberal and my parents have always been conservative. My dad has gotten more and more right-wing over the past few years and he plans to vote for Trump. My mom thinks he's crazy (as does the rest of our family) and she has been known to throw away his bumper stickers and yard signs. She plans to support Clinton- her first Democrat vote in decades. We tend to have pretty spirited debates and make lots of political jokes about both sides but this year my dad is really defensive about Trump. It's pretty worrisome to me that my dad, who is extremely intelligent and has logical conservative views due to religious reasons (even though I disagree with him) would support someone who is so obviously insane.

My ILs are also Trump supporters and lifelong Republicans. My MIL once asked me not to tell her family that I was a Democrat lol.... We don't ever talk about politics.

Avoid the topic, and leave the conversation if you have to. This has been my life for over 10 years now. My parents were liberal and voted Dem their whole lives, until 9/11. Then Fox News came along and they got sucked in. My dad is a proud Trump supporter and it has taken me years to figure out how to have a reasonable conversation with him again, as he loves to talk politics. I have a steady stream of neutral topics that I bring up (sports, latest movies, stuff LO is up to, etc) to change the topic. When he persists, I physically leave the room if I can. It has taken awhile, but he has finally gotten the idea. He still loves to "tease" me about it but I shut it down immediately and we get along much better now.

I live in a very conservative area, and my in-laws are Trump supporters, I've don't my best at holding my tongue because it's just easier than being ganged up on for my Hilary support. I'll speak my truth if asked directly, and then say "we obviously disagree, so lets just leave it be" and usually that is enough for them to back off if not I'll get up and walk away to "check on the kids."

My dad brings it up everytime we see each other. I'm more middle road (history of voting conservative... but lately unsure because I'm split pretty evenly between parties on major issues...). I could never ever vote for Trump. I don't love Clinton either. Sanders would have been my choice.
My dad thinks Clinton is basically the devil and while he isn't a Trump lover, he is planning to vote for him and respects him enough to defend him. So we argue a lot.
He also thinks women shouldn't work. So there's that whole argument too.
It's exhausting.
When he brings it up, I walk away. Neither of us will be influenced by the other. Not sure he'd ever respect what I have to say anyhow.

... avoid the topic? I think thats really the only thing you can do. The only family member I know who may vote for trump is my SIL and I don't like her anyways so it isn't such a thing. But I feel like there is no feeling better about it, only trying to forget that it exists.

Anyone else struggling w political discord and its impact on extended family relationships?

I have anxiety about the prospect of a Trump presidency...I honestly stay up worrying at night. My MIL had been liberal her entire life (Jewish, from NYC as a background) but now her long term boyfriend of 7 years has strongly influenced her. Her only source of news is now Fox News (shudder). She just seems to go along with his opinions. I'm worried if the trifecta of horrible happens - 1- Trump wins 2- he wins Florida (where they live) and 3- they vote for Trump, it may forever change my relationship with them, especially the boyfriend. Advice?
