@muffinsmuffins: OMG white or colored options on the same tree?! That is genius! Never seen that before!! DW and I hotly disagree about the light type 😂😂😂

The year DD was an infant with raging ear infections and the year DH broke his leg badly and I was suddenly solo caretaker of DH and DD I threw in the towel. I assembled our fake tree, threw lights on it, a topper and a handful of sentimental ornaments. The rest of the ornaments stayed in the box.

I want to add that a nice fake tree is a great option. Ours is pre-lit so it’s just ornaments and it sets up easily so I can do it whenever we have like a half hour spare time to decorate rather than having to make a trip to get it, put it in the garage to fluff up, drag it inside, level it and clean up needles! It can be white lights, multi colour or both and flash on and off. We travel for usually about a week after Christmas and coming home to a totally dried to a crisp tree was super messy. Fake tree all the way!

I've done all kinds of things. We typically also have a box tree, which is a bunch of boxes stacked to look like a tree, either wrapped in paper or painted. Last year, for example, we did a minecraft tree. This year, we are doing a sponge bob one...we actually need to get the boxes, i've been delayed this year!

This is the first year we'll be traveling for winter break, so this is really timely. I love real trees, and am having a hard time convincing myself to get a fake one, but I also don't want to go all out on decorations and then have to break everything down for the week+ that we'll be gone.

Agree with above, your kid will love whatever you do! We do it all and I’m more into it as my kids get older, but I love it too. Some years in the past we only did mini trees and that was magical too (in fact now we do kid mini trees AND a big tree  )

We've done the range of super light to the whole nine yards and we are always traveling for Xmas. We typically leave around 12/22 and are away for 2 weeks, so we stopped getting a real tree in favor of a really nice fake one (purchased during after Xmas sale)

I started to get sad in grad school when I didn't decorate at all because it felt like Xmas was over too quickly! So I decorate much earlier now than I did when I was living closer to family to get myself in the holiday mood. We start the weekend after Thanksgiving so that we (I) have about a month to enjoy it!

I'd say do what feels good to you. I'm definitely a big fan of the nicer fake greens (it's too hot in Texas for real ones to last very long), but I go pre-lit and I try to keep the tchotchkes to a minimum. I added on slowly, because I hate getting overwhelmed with take-down. If I don't love it, I don't put it out (because, let's face it, I'm putting it up and I'm taking it down).

The first year I decorated a standing lamp with a garland and some lights and called it a "pole tree"! The next year we got a smaller-scale real tree and the needle mess was epic!
After that, we did a tiny grocery-store real tree and put it on a table with other decorations and put lights around the front door.
Then we bought the pre-lit fake tree and I only did a few ornaments (we only had a few).
Now we've added a lit garland for the mantle, stockings, some red throw pillows and a bunch of outdoor lights and wreaths. This year I caved and bought some tchotchkes, mostly for DS's benefit!

I've written this out because everyone has a different idea of what's minimal for Christmas decorations, and that's the point. I say decorate until you feel "done" and then quit, and kiddo will love it because it's home!

We travel too. I voted for no decorations because that's what we've opted for this year, but in years past we've done a full tree or a mini tree. The mini tree was easier and I preferred it. The decorating falls to me and some years I have it in me to do more than others, depending on work and such.

We started doing a small tree even if we were traveling once we had LO (we lived in a small condo so a small tree was plenty!). We’ve stayed home for Christmas every year since we moved into our house, but are traveling this year. I plan to still get a decent sized tree and decorate. But I may do slightly less only because we aren’t also hosting everyone this year.

I always decorate completely because I enjoy it. However, if it's not your thing, I don't think you're going to do any damage to your LO. Even just a couple decorations would get a 2 year old in the spirit.

I would do it all! We always have a fake tree and love to have our decorations up for a long time! They usually go up early to mid November and stay up until mid January.

We do it all. I have always put up my tree in mid/late November, and we don’t travel until Dec 22 or 23, so I figure we still have a full month to enjoy it.

We typically travel to see family over winter break. In past years, we’ve experimented with no decorations, light decorations/no tree, light decorations with tree and a lot of decorations! This will be my DS’s (age 2) first time getting the hang of experiencing the holidays. Mostly I feel torn between the tree vs no tree options, sometimes thinking we should go all out and other times something more scaled back..

What do you do to make your home festive and fun for small kids even when traveling for the holidays?

(Poll first-timer. Bear with me!)
