DS did this a lot and I still sometimes see him do it. He has no delays or anything. I remember googling it and seeing that the first few years kids are walking their achilles can be tight so it makes it uncomfortable at times to walk flat footed. DD, who's 15 months and been walking since 9 months, has not done it once yet.

DD (2.5) does occasionally but I think she just thinks it's fun. She'll comment on it, like "on my tippy toes!" and smile.

This may be a silly questions but is toe walking just going on tippy toes like we would do to make ourselves taller or walking on the top of the toes with them curled under?

My son walks like this often throughout the day where his toes are curled under and walking on them. he is 20 months and also doesn't talk much but is trying. he is very bright and active and has no issues in sneakers or anything. I have been a little worried about his speech but didn't think the way he was walking would have anything to do with it.

@hellobeeboston: for what it's worth
Ds, whose autistic never toe walked. I wouldn't worry about it unless your seeing a lot of other things accompany it.

My son did it occasionally around that age. He’s almost three now and mostly has grown out of it. He is likely on the spectrum though we are waiting for additional evaluation. Two of my adult friends told me they toe walked until age 7/8 and grew out of it. I would consider it as a concern only in the context of other developmental milestones and behaviors.

My daughter did occasionally and it worried me. But it was no big deal. We know now that she was just doing it for fun. I think it’s only a sign of something if there are a lot of other symptoms accompanying it.

ETA: this was when she was about 14-18 months.. she’s almost 3 and only does it now in ballet or to be silly

@muffinsmuffins: thanks! Yeah I remember my (now 5yo) son doing it off and on. And he stopped.

My younger son (turned 2 last month) does it off and on, I don’t notice it too much. But his ei person for speech keeps mentioning it.

I treat lots of clients who are toe walkers. If it's in a kid under age 5 or 6 and sporadic, I wouldn't worry. Over age 5 would warrant a doctors visit to be checked and maybe refer to a Physio. Continuous, sudden or more as they're older is more of an issue but not necessarily something that is automatically bad.

I didn’t vote beceause I wouldn’t classify it as all the time but sometimes didn’t seem like enough either. It was frequent but not exclusive. He did it for a while and he eventually outgrew it.
We occasionally asked if he could walk flat on his feet and he eventually just stopped the toe walking.

If it comes on suddenly though I’d go to doc. Doesn’t mean anything life threatening but it did indicate an illness when he started doing it again out of the blue. He had a virus and it basically caused muscle stiffness and pain called myositis. And for whatever reason toe waking alleviates the pain. It goes away on his own but the fact that he had it helped the doctor diagnose the virus.

I voted never - neither of mine really did. I mean I’ve seen them do occasionally, but it was never a thing they did for periods of time. Just a one off thing during the day

Did your kids toe walk? Did they grow out of it or did it relate to developmental delay or the need for physical therapy??
