We mainly waited until he got past his new brother regressions and things settled down, but I was still up at night with little brother. His transition has been excellent so far (at 1 month, knock on wood!), he really seemed ready. It was mostly because we wants to do it way in advance of #2's arrival and also cause we thought she may be ready. She wasn't climbing out or anything. We converted her crib into a toddler bed and she got out once during nap time. I told her she needed to stay in bed. She totally understood and hasn't gotten out of bed. In the end we weren't ready to potentially disrupt his sleep after sleep struggles and bought a new crib and mattress. She started routinely unzipping her sleep sack and climbing out of her crib right after her second birthday. So, off came the crib rail and she was in a toddler bed. We moved LO from our bed to a toddler bed at 23 months. Simply because her sleep was horrible and had nothing to lose.
