We did the Carlsons drops of vitamin D starting at 2 months. We live in cloudy PNW and were hardly outside in the winter months so I felt that it was warranted. I know that I'm deficient in vitamin D as well.

As for iron, I've read that babies are born with iron stores of 6 months so after 6 months, EBF babies should get some iron via solids or supplements.

I'll add: we were pressured by our first pediatrician to give our EBF infant vitamin drops (and have been pressured by our current one since to put fluoride in her mouth, but that's another story) and I just didn't feel at ease about it. I trust my intuition a lot, and research to back it up, and with EBF babies, I just don't believe they need additional supplements. Here's some great info: http://kellymom.com/nutrition/vitamins/vitamins/

Thanks for the responses-we are back in to see him on Friday and I think I'll ask him about the Carlson's. We avoid artificial stuff and I would really prefer not to start LO on it at 4 days old.

I gave it to both of my boys, more with our first b/c I just kept forgetting with our second. I did get Carlson's Vit D drops and use it when I remember, even now. Carlson's is easy to give b/c you can put it in their milk or water. It's just one drop and that's it. I just ask my oldest to open his mouth and I drop one in there. My oldest actually was a bit anemic shortly after he was born so he also had to take some iron while I upped my iron intake as well.

Our pedi recommended that too but we give the Carlson's Vit D drops (it's just Vit D in coconut oil). I'm really bad about remembering...I give them maybe 1-2 times a week, but we spend a fair amount of time outside in the sun.

We gave tri vi sol from the beginning. Formula and cow's milk are fortified with vitamin D while breast milk obviously isn't. I think most peds will say that they're not necessary, but our ped recommended it and we didn't have a problem giving it.

Those are most definitely provided until at least 6 months old. After 6 months there may be evidence that some of that is reduced in the breastmilk. My pediatrician recommended it at 6 months old but I never gave my son any of those. My philosophy is that he can be tested and if his levels are low I would. Granted, I love in a desert and sun is always out so Vitamin D is less important because we get it. Some locations have common Vitamin D deficiencies (and if you are there you may want to look into that).
