@irene: yes, to the feeling of stress when it's not you that even did it! I feel the exact same way when things happen to my son!

@blackbird: He has issues with unfamiliar bathrooms, or wrong people/potty combinations. He would hold it as much as he can when we go out (he would really fight me if I take him to the bathroom and/or offer him a choice of going to the bathroom while we are out). When I pick him up, he would NOT use the bathroom before we leave because he wants to hold it out until he gets home (which causes a ton of accidents in the car, so now I call 5 minutes ahead and ask them to take him to the bathroom. Maybe that's why the teacher isn't that crazy about us).

I am guessing with yesterday, he never really felt the urge to need to poop at school before, so he didn't quite know what to do. Maybe he tried to hold it but then he couldn't hold it anymore, so he cried hysterically. I don't know, I am just guessing. Sigh.

Oh yes, I think he tried to hold his poop too, because there are days that he is mildly constipated. He is never the constipated kinda kid.

I really don't know what to do. I just hope that like everything, this is just a phase! Or he may need to be in pull ups until he's 18.

Is he scared of the school toilet? I don't like pooping in public places! In fact, I go down to the manufacturing floor and use a practically secret bathroom! Oh and my brother used to hold it in and make himself sick!

Thanks everyone - now I feel less worried/bad knowing that it happens to other people too. I am not sure why I was made aware of the situation as if it never happens to anyone... or maybe I am just sensitive? I dunno :( I hope DS didn't get scolded at when it happened... I felt stressed and I wasn't even the one who pooped my pants...

@lamariniere: Good for you - my son won't even let me take him to the potty at school. That is an entirely different struggle/story.

@mauxie: Thanks, what you said made me think I should talk to the director if it does happens again... which of course, I hope it doesn't happen again lol. It is so weird, how can you expect a child to never ever have a poopy accident? I would understand that they want to go back to pull ups if he had a poopy accident every other day. But he had his first poopy accident after weeks of being in underwear. :(

A part of me gets that's their policy but I'd be a bit upset at the idea of going back to pullups, too. Kids have accidents! At our daycare, LO has had a few poop accidents since training (like your LO, she usually goes poop at home so does fine with just pee at school). I'm sure the teachers don't enjoy changing her out of the poop mess but they would not have her go back to pullups bc even in their view, that will make her regress more and/or may make her feel shamed about the accidents. If it was an issue, I think they'd be more about coming up with a plan to get LO comfy with going poop at school (rewards, more reminders, books/songs, whatever); not just saying it's unsanitary and policy to revert to pullups.. I'm sorry they made you feel that way :(

@irene: As a teacher, I say don't worry too much. It happens, especially when they are so young. I'm sorry the teachers made you feel that way :( Now, I have a 5 year old in my class who has poop accidents 2-3 times a week. THAT is an issue.

Don't worry too much! Your son is still young and pretty freshly trained. It definitely sucks for the teachers, but I think it's normal. I'm sure he was busy playing or got caught off guard if it suddenly became urgent. I think it would be rare for a kid to never have a poop accident at least once at school, especially at that age.

Also, it did take awhile for my son to become comfortable pooping at school. He would normally just do it at home, but if he suddenly needed to go while at school, he would get upset about it. One day I came to pick him up and the teacher said he must be constipated or have an infection because he was saying he needed to go all day, then crying when he couldn't. So I went with him to the toilet at school, reassured him, and he was able to poop with no problem. So there could be a comfort thing too.

@mrs. tictactoe: I guess the teacher doesn't like me lol

In a way I understand - it is school rules that kids must remain in pull ups until they pooped in the potty. Then they can switch to training pants and then underwear. My son has been pooping in the toilet for months, but he doesn't poop at school because he usually poop in the morning and in the evening (when he's at home). So I suggested to the teachers if we can switch to underwear they said yes. We were in underwear for many weeks, only a few pee accidents here and there. I was told he used to potty to poop just last thursday (again, crying and not telling them that he needs to go). Then this happens. I guess I understand why the teacher who told me was a bit short - I wouldn't want to clean up poop either! Just I am bummed :(

I have a feeling that we'll be delayed to get promoted to the next classroom when he's 3, again. This school really hates us lol (or all his classmates are super advanced).

@meredithNYC: @BananaPancakes: Thanks!

@irene: I'm sorry they treated you that way. That seems unfair, especially since they're dealing with young children. They should be used to accidents and be understanding that they will happen from time to time.

I'm with @meredithNYC. You're doing just fine. My 2.5 year old isn't remotely close to being potty trained. He's in a class with 7 other 2-2.5 year olds and none of them are in underwear yet, either. A poop accident every once in a while is common, I'm sure!

@mrs. tictactoe: That's nice of your teachers..... our teacher talked to me as if I committed a really serious crime :-( I do understand that it is not sanitary to have poop accidents and it is not acceptable, but it makes me feel incredibly bad, like we are the only ones who has poopy accidents. :(

ETA: At least your son tells the teachers! I don't understand why DS doesn't (and he always tell me at home).

Liam has been potty trained since before he was 2 and he's 2.5 now. He has had a couple of poop accidents at school, usually when he's busy playing outside and tells them and doesn't make it to the bathroom in time. They said not to worry about it, though. We remind him to tell his teachers, but he's young, so I think an accident once in a while is normal.

so bummed.

DS is 2.5 years old ++ and is day trained. He wears his underwear to school for many weeks now. We've been doing fine (well, we have struggles here and there, but generally fine) except yesterday when I went to pick DS from daycare, the teacher told me LO had a poop accident. I was told he sat at the table and suddenly cried hysterically. Teacher went over to ask him what's wrong, but he wouldn't say anything. Until at one point, they asked him, do you have to use the potty? DS nodded and said yeah. It was too late.

Teacher went on to tell me that he doesn't use his words. She also told me if it happens once more, we have to go back to pull ups. :-(

DS always tell me when he needs to poop and pee in the potty. I am not sure why he won't do the same at school.

I don't have a point to this post, just bummed. 2 steps forward 3 steps back... I am sure it is incredibily silly when I look back at it in a year, but just bummed at the moment. Like I did something wrong or get scolded by the teacher, and I couldn't control the outcome.

Do you have any set backs / frustrations on your potty training journey recently?
