@ShootingStar: I did that!

I'm going to try vinegar. It's colors so I can't use bleach.

It's probably the gasket on the front that's retaining smells. I would take some clorox wipes and try to get it as clean as possible and get anything out that's still stuck in there. Then run a sanitation cycle.

Oh gross. Sorry. We had poop in our washer before but it never got stuck in anything... Ew. I was going to suggest vinegar - it's a great smell remover. I don't know how front-loaders work, though.

I dump in a cup of vinegar into the washer, add 1/2 cup of baking powder, add detergent and wash on hot. That is to take care of stinky towels - this situation may call for color safe bleach!

BLEACH. I do a hot bleach cycle and let it sit for awhile (overnight if possible), but I have a top loader.

I'm sorry. I've been there. It sucks and is one reason I'm glad we aren't doing cloth right now.

@T.H.O.U.: Just toss some into the front loader and run hot load?

A toddler turd made its way into the laundry without me knowing. It was trapped in the ring of the front loader without me knowing. Overnight. With the "clean laundry." The washing machine STINKS. I washed the clothes again. Still stink. Then used front loader cleaner without any clothing. Smelled ok. Ran the laundry again. Still stinks. Am now running hot water through machine.

Any other tips???? WTH do I do!!!!
