We couldn't even convince our 3 year old to sit on the potty most days. One day when my husband was staying home with our son and it had been at least 3 days since the last poop, my husband picked up a suppository from the drug store. They used it and within 5 minutes everything was ready to come out. My son sat on his potty and he was delighted when it worked. This experience appeared to have given him the confidence he needed to poop on the potty. The best thing here was adding in a really mild dose of Osmolax (takes water straight to the bowel) to keep things soft, as she's not fighting it so much now. He says he has to go and runs to the potty sits for a minute and then gets off and says he doesn't have to go. By the time he does have to go, it's already happening and he has an accident on the floor or in his undies and he's a total wreck about it. This is only for poops. It makes it hard for us to go anywhere. I'm not sure what to do - the extended sitting doesn't help us at all, and it's only worked a few times to distract with books. Any suggestions? Eek. Lately D has starte saying he doesn't want to poop distressed because I think it does hurt sometimes. What ha sheen working for us is naked time at home, no pressure at all, and lots and lots of taking about running to the bathroom when you feel the big poop coming. Sitting for any extended time doesn't help at all. We literally run when it's ready and he sits for a minute. It seems to have helped the reluctance. He was a bit younger though, closer to 2. She said to get some sort of stick or wand (like a cool one that a kid would want) and leave it outside the door then have your LO find it by knocking on the door or ringing the bell. Say that it's from the "poop fairy" (lol) and that if she holds it while she poops then it won't hurt (and only let her hold it while she's on the toilet). (This was just for pees--we didn't have a poop issue.) so our compromise was to have her sit on the potty and 'try' until I counted to 10. I counted fast or slow depending on what she needed. If she didn't have anything come out then we went on our way. We woke up to a poop in her nappy today (and no fussing) and made a big fuss about flushing it down the toilet, which she seemed really pleased about.</p> <p>I will definitely keep on the softener just to make it easier. I wish the explaining about holding = hurting would help, but she's just not there yet.</p> <p>She's got a stool, she's got access to books/iPad songs, etc.. but she just goes from fine to distressed REALLY quickly! </p> <p>We will keep persevering.. I know it'll click eventually, it's just so hard going from a really regular kiddo (in nappies, that is) to holding.. It was a viscious cycle of him being afraid of painful poops and withholding causing firm, hard, painful poops. We ended up loading him up with juice and Miralax so that he couldn't hold it in anymore. We dealt with a few poop accidents in his underwear, but I actually preferred that over the holding. Once we were able to get a number of non-constipated poops consistently in the toilet, his fear finally subsided. When he would make his face of "impending poop", I would rush him to the toilet and have him lean forward to give me a hug, and encourage him to push the poop out. I think the position and the hug helped. The Miralax was also key to "force" the issue. Your poop needs to come out. We are going to go sit on the potty now." Then get her settled with her feet firmly on a very high stool and do something distracting like read books for ten minutes. Maybe she will relax? We also like to play a game called "listen for toots." So we settle on the potty and reassure LO that you don't have to poop, let's just see if you can do a big noisy toot. Then we wait and make big dramatic listening faces and if there is a toot we laugh. Just explain to her that not holding her poop will help it get easier. She basically decided on her own she was ready to toilet train about two months ago and has been amazing since - for wees. She's in undies all the time, except for nights, as she is nowhere near ready for holding comfortably at bedtime yet. (That's ok, we'll let her lead there too.)</p> <p>In the early days of toilet training, she'd wait til her night time nappy to poop.. so that was fine; it was obviously her choice to wait. But as the weeks went on, she's definitely started to HOLD a lot more than what she is/we are comfortable with.</p> <p>When I ask her about poops, she tells me it hurts - and I know that's because of the holding. She walks around clutching her butt when it's getting bad, but we physically cannot 'make' her go. I'm at a loss, because I'm not sure what else we can do to encourage her - there's no pressure to have to do it in the potty, we've even offered nappies to help her feel secure with it - but even that's not helping!</p> <p>Thankfully it's not affecting her peeing, she's still a pro. :) </p> <p>This is a kid who has NEVER, not even as a baby, had an issue with constipation - so we're at a loss. Doctor said it can be a normal thing while children are learning to control the potty training journey, and has given us some drops to try and help soften things up... but it's not helping the holding.</p> <p>She eats a tonne of fibre and fruits, etc. I'm just wondering whether there are any other suggestions for working through it with her, or if this is just a mental block we need to let her work through on her own. </p>
