Around 9 months. She got horribly constipated when it started so I give her a little prunes every day to keep things going.

Softer is better. If they get too hard kids can get constipated. GI docs usually say "ideal" stool for kids should be like toothpaste.

My DD started the solid poos around 8 months, but from talking with other moms that was on the earlier end. She got constipated semi-often around that time

@mrsvdv: definitely just smooshed. My daughter has been occasionally pooping in the potty for months now, and they come out formed into the potty. they just get squished in the diaper!

@sandy: thank you, that's reassuring! LO also eats a lot of fruit and vegetables, a bit of meat and some bread - I try to keep his diet as healthy as possible. But good to know other babies have this too, and I honestly never thought of it as a smushed log!

@mrsvdv: my LO was EBF and always had soft stools. Rarely did she ever had a hard stool in her diaper even up until 24 months when we potty trained. She eats a lot of fruits and veggies and milk and water so her pediatrician said it was actually a good thing. That it meant she had a healthy diet and well hydrated. She said it would also likely mean no potty training issues for poo bc it is likely very easy for her to have a BM. And she was right - she potty trained and poo trained so easily. And now that she goes poo in the potty the poo is a log...I guess it was just a soft log so it would get smooshed in her diaper easily.

@pastemoo: I never thought of that! But I guess this is what my mom meant when she said he'll make them once he starts to go on the potty

TBH, the "sausages" look looser in a diaper but come out pretty normally in the toilet. If you found a poop log in the diaper, baby is constipated--no bueno!

Lo's didn't start getting solid until she was really eating a lot of food - maybe 14 months? It's still smushy fairly often though at 18 months. We are still breastfeeding - not sure if that has anything to do with texture at this stage.

If I remember right, it was after he was one. I want to say they firmed up once I weaned him from breastfeeding. So maybe the formula is what is making them looser?

Ok, I feel a bit silly talking about this but I have a poop question: When did your LO start to make "real" stool? And by "real" I mean the firm sausage kind, not the semi-loose, semi-consistent kind that's spread all over the inside of the diaper.
LO is 12 months now and still doesn't make firm poop. Although he did make them for a little while around 5 months old, when we introduced fruit into his diet. But then he got ill with a respiratory virus and his poop became more fluid again, and it never went back to "normal". It never crossed my mind to tell his doctor about this because he eats very well, his height and weight are totally normal, he keeps growing, no fevers or fussiness, nothing that indicates something's wrong. And it's not diarrhea, just soft, rather loose stool. A friend suggested switching from the regular formula he drinks now, to soy formula. Could this help?
