We started too early with my son because of daycare at 3. It was a cautionary tale for sure. He is occasionally consitpated but often enough. And he still has occasionally accidents at 6.5 years old. (Like yesterday for example). He did respond very well to the ins and outs of poop and he knows he needs to drink water and eat his fiber. Having a morning poop routine is ideal because we can mostly avoid issues the rest of the day. But when we’re rushing or he has a special event we have issues. I’m happy to talk more.. If I could start over again I would’ve delayed at least a year.

Ok, I'm reading the Ins and Outs of Poop - nothing like a sunny afternoon sitting on the deck reading about poop!

Pooping in a diaper doesn't seem to be an issue, he's never asked for one - in fact he resists the suggestion of them. He did poop in the potty yesterday, but also twice in his underpants and once in the bath. I'm not sure what's going on - hopefully if we get the constipation under control things will progress naturally from there? Ugh. I'm so tired of thinking about poop.

We still have to give our son Miralax every few days and we are working on getting it all out at once instead of just a little bit every time.
He loves the Meet Softy the Poop book that is by the author of the Ins and Outs of Poop and I think it has helped wanting to see everything in a toilet. It's taken awhile to get there.

@erinbaderin: My DS has chronic constipation also. After our first potty training attempt totally failed (6 poops in the underwear per day) I got the book The Ins and Outs of Poop that the Bees did a couple blog posts on years ago. https://www.hellobee.com/2012/10/26/the-ins-and-outs-of-poop-part-1/

DS really responded to the recommendations in the book. I recall the Play-Doh demonstration and sitting on the potty practicing blowing helped a lot. And the reward chart for what seemed like very little progress. I tried every tip I read about and things progressed very quickly from there.

We had the problem of pooping in underwear. It lasted about 8 months. When he was with his grandparents, they gave him cars underwear while we had plain colored underwear. He was told that he had to keep Lightning McQueen clean and it worked.

He did have a success here and there in the time between, but it never lasted, even though we praised heavily.

We had poop issues and constipation as well. Our issue was more withholding both pee and poop until he was literally writhing on the floor :meh: We did a clean out with restoralax and he’s still on a small dose a year and a bit later. We also had to play with the dose as it was so painful for him but then too soft. 1/3 of a dose seemed helpful, then we switched to every other day. Also we had to basically figure out ways to keep him on the potty long enough to relax. We bought every book about poop and made it super funny and we would sit until he was relaxed enough to go. I also made up silly dances and songs when he was successful. AND I bought like 75 hot wheels cars off a used stuff website and that was his reward for pooping. That was a game changer. Yes we have cars literally everywhere from potty training.

We had to also tell him we couldn’t do things until he went or at least tried. As in, we can’t go to the park until you try. We did this like a million times a day. Likely with him going in his pants, if you set a timer and make him sit repeatedly, give him a show or book, then reward if you like, he’ll end up going and you can make a big thing of it and all is well after a few successful times...so easy right?!?! :silly: good luck! It was a couple month struggle for us.

So my DD was pee trained just before 3 but wasn't poop trained until 4. She also has always struggled with constipation and would also hold her poop as a control thing. At the advice of her pediatrician we allowed her to continue pooping in a diaper. She would tell us she needed to poop and we would get a diaper for her. She had to stay in the bathroom while pooping. Starting at 3 years 9 months we would ask her to try sitting on the toilet before she could have a diaper. Just after turning four something clicked and she no longer needed the diaper.

I realize that many people would not be okay with this approach but it worked really well for us. Pushing our DD to do things before she is ready/comfortable can make her even more hesitant.

We started potty training my 3 year old over Easter weekend. He’s doing pretty well with pee, but pooping is a whole different story. The first weekend he was ok but since then he’s almost exclusively pooped in his underpants (or other places....once in the bath, once on my parents’ floor, and once on my bedspread...yeesh). We talk a lot about putting poop in the potty, he seems to understand the theory, and yet here we are.

Complicating factor is that he’s had chronic constipation his whole life. We may have acted a bit too soon in trying to wean him off it without solidifying the training - we were trying to dial the dose down a bit to “firm things up” if you know what I’m saying, and we may have gone too far.

Help! Tips on either problem welcomed!
