@looch: Success! I kept this in mind yesterday. We were out all afternoon, so she hadn't gone yet. After dinner I waited 10 minutes and then set her up on the potty with a step stool and her tablet and told her she was going to just hang out there for a bit to see if the poop was ready to come out. Took about 20 minutes of happily playing with her tablet, but then she pooped! She was so proud of herself.

My son's gastro said that the best time to "catch" a bowel movement is about 10 minutes after a meal. I don't know how you'd get her there, but we asked our son to sit for a few minutes even if he didn't have to go to get used to the feeling.

Also, sitting to have a BM is a different feeling than standing, so make sure she has the right tools, like either a standalone potty or a ring and a step stool on an adult version.

@bhbee: I think the consistency is still looser than normal. Probably due to being on daily antibiotics from 6m-22m. Luckily, she's off them now, but maybe I need to get her back on the probiotics to see if it makes her gut happier.

@Mrs. Toad: I'm glad I'm not the only one, although I'm hoping this doesn't continue for 4 months!!

@dolphin: We've tried bribes too. Problem is, she isn't refusing to go on the potty, just isn't quite getting the hang of feeling it coming, so she ends up going in her underwear before she realizes what is happening, I think!

@DesertDreams88: Thanks! Good to know it might just improve on it's own with more time and consistency. We are doing those things as well so hopefully we are on the right track.

@Iced Tea: Sounds good. It's definitely an odd change in routine, so I get that it's not easy to learn. Honestly, if we hadn't gone 4 days with a dry pull up we probably wouldn't have switched to underwear when we did, but she just seemed SO ready. Hopefully she'll get the poopin' thing soon too.

@LindsayInNY: I think so too, especially for her. She doesn't have any qualms about it, just doesn't get the timing yet. Thanks!

@pachamama: Thank you! It's going, slowly but surely. We are legally prospective adoptive parents, but the appeals process isn't over yet so technically it isn't a sure thing. We are hoping for the fall, but realistically expecting it to potentially be spring before things are finalized. Luckily every social worker involved in the case is chomping at the bit and our home study is done, so once the appeals process is over, things should move pretty quickly.

@Mrs. Turtle: No advice, sorry!! But I was curious how things are going with the adoption? Not to threadjack but I have been following you for a while and hope everything is going well. You are such a good mommy :-)

My daughter was pee trained and one in diapers for 3-4 months before she starting pooping on the toilet. She didn’t have a consistent schedule so it was hard to catch. One day she started going in the toilet and has been fine ever since. It’s normal but no suggestions since I think it’s control issue for kids.

The journey to pooping on the potty is such a weird one. My LO was unusual in that she reliably pooped on the potty first, before reliably peeing there. She would sign potty and I would take her since before a year old (crazy, right?). Then at about 2 years 2 months she decided she didn’t want to use the potty, at all. It lasted maybe four months. After a couple months of watching other kids at preschool, she decided peeing in the potty was cool, but not pooping. And then suddenly two months later, she started going to the potty to poop completely by herself (just before turning 3). It seems that she needed the confidence to know she could do it by herself. I think in your case I’d most likely wait it out.

So in summary I think just keep pushing through. We do commando at home and undies when our. I'd rather clean poop off the floor when home, and throw away undies when out if it happens.

Another option is using Viva paper towels as liners. They are very soft and used as liners in cloth diapers by many people in the Fluff Love community. I'd only do that if throwing away undies became a daily thing.

Today is the end of week 4 with potty training and this has been our main issue. It has gone through about 4 stages so far, week by week:
1) him not recognizing his body's signals until it was too late.
2) him recognizing the feeling and having a bunch of false starts where he run to the potty, sit, and say he was done. Then after 3-4 times of this, like 10 minutes later, he would poop on the floor.
3) he would grab his but, say potty, and then try to make it... but poop on his way to the potty.
4) now he grabs his butt, says potty, runs, and 50/50 chance he actually poops on the toilet.

Some things I think are helping:

We did "run" him to the potty as it was happening though, and /or bring him to the potty and clean him up there.

He has predictable times and/or signals, so when it's time, we put him on the potty, use a step stool to prop his legs up in a squatting position, and let him read a book while we fiddle with things at the sink or "get" something in another room so he has privacy in his head. All of those are tips from the OCPT book.

For us, it hasn't mattered what he wears on the bottom. For the first week we did commando, and I thought it was a failure. But then we started focusing on peeing at intervals or transitions, and that clicked. Despite wearing a diaper for about 70% of his awake time, he's been dry in it for the past 2 weeks and only used it once for a long car ride.

No idea. DD1 was so easy to potty train. She peed and pooped in the potty right away and never had a poop accident. DD2 on the other hand will pee in the potty but refuses to poop in it. She tells me she needs to poop AS she’s pooping in her underwear. I don’t know how to get her to poop in the potty! We’ve tried bribes but doesn’t work. We’ve been going through a lot of underwear. :bummed:

DS has been pee trained for over 4 months. He only poops in his underwear or nighttime diaper. I tried bottomless and he pooped on the floor. I just clean him and the underwear up. I dry the underwear out and later throw it in the washer.

I have given up. He will poop in the toilet sometime. Probably when I train DD, who is 14 months old. I hope that having 5 days with his grandparents will train him, but that is at the end of July.

I love the title of this post :silly:

We also only have poop accidents at home so I think bottomless there is a good idea and keep underwear elsewhere. And yeah, just throw it out if needed .... I had one of those yesterday. I wouldn’t shy away from bribes if it helps with trying more either, for my kids they stop asking for them quickly but can sometimes help a habit to start.
What consistency are the poops? It’s always possible if there’s constipation she really can’t feel the signals correctly. Too firm or too loose would both be concerns there.

Bottomless as much as possible, while also investing in more underwear. We are in the middle of a regression right now and my mom keeps putting her in pull ups which makes me want to pull my hair out! Does your DD only have accidents at home? We have accidents at home more often than when we are out, so staying away from home actually works better for us. Also if she is going at predictable times you could have her sit on the potty and remind her she’s probably going to have to go so maybe she could try.

So...we are just about 2 weeks in of underwear all day, including naps, long drives, outings, even a hike. We've had a few per accidents but maybe 3-4 total. She's been doing great. Poopin' (as she calls it) is mostly happening in the underwear. She wants to go on the potty, and has a couple times, but the majority of poops have been in the underwear. Its like she just can't feel it coming in time. Do we have to stay home more (not always an option)? Do bottomless time? Go back to pull ups? Just wait it out and invest in lots of underwear?
