M gave up her paci when she found her hands, too. Now if you put a paci in her mouth, she takes it out and coos at it. While hilarious, not conducive to napping. Since he will be a daycare kid, definitely allow him something that will soothe him. If it's his fingers, it's his fingers. There will be time later to break him of the finger/thumb addiction. Believe me, I did not want my lo to have a paci or a thumb but....what can you do? Go with the fingers/thumb.

I say just go with it. I think that if they have a preference for thumbsucking, they're going to do that whether there's a paci there or not.

She gave up the soother too when her hand became an option. I didn't want a thumbsucker either, but I can't very well strap her arms down so we're just going to roll with it.

we had a paci loving baby and he dropped the paci as soon as he found his hands. He sucked on his fingers until he was about 2, then dropped that on his own as well. Honestly I say, especially going into a daycare situation, whatever soothes him to sleep (and comforts him when he's sad), go for it!

our second is 4 months and she cannot keep a paci in her mouth either, and is taking a lot longer to find her hands unfortunately.

Your mom's method is genius...!!!

My LO is 2.5 mo old and will be heading to daycare in a few weeks. He only wants a pacifier when it's time to nap. Problem is, we have tried every kind Target carries and he can't get any of them to stay in his mouth without us holding it in. I'm guessing daycare isn't going to be that nice! Now that he's discovered his hands, his taken matters into them...by sucking on them when the pacifier fails him. I don't really want a thumb sucking child but we can't hold the pacifier for him either. Luckily, this only happens for naps and he goes to bed at night like a champ without anything.

Please note, I was a thumbsucking child, did not have teeth problems and my mom was clever about breaking my habit. Every time she caught me with my thumb in my mouth, she would sew my blankie in half. Needless to say, she broke two habits in one! So I'm started to lean towards just letting it happen for him despite not wanting to!

Any tips?
