I'll be the first to admit that I have been uncomfortable in the past with seeing someone breastfeed in church (though it was sort of a weird circumstance, and I questioned these people's behavior in Church at other times as well). But the Pope is right-if the Church is pro-life, it has to be pro-family, too. He is such an amazing figure and really is taking on some tough issues but ones that are important. In response, he suggested that people should recycle food and be less wasteful, and then told a story that was both a reminder of the resources we have, and a declaration that breastfeeding mothers shouldn't be ashamed to feed their babies when they're hungry. He explained:</p> <p>At the Wednesday General Audience the other day there was a young mother behind one of the barriers with a baby that was just a few month s old. The child was crying its eyes out as I came past. The mother was caressing it. She was shy and didn’t want to breastfeed in public, while the Pope was passing. I wish to say the same to humanity: give people something to eat!"</p> <p>I think it's pretty great. I know after this, I would feel a little more comfortable nursing LO in church (though I'd probably still feel like I need to use a cover). There's also a photo of him kissing a baby while the baby is nursing, which I'd pretty much only feel comfortable with DH or the pope doing!</p> <p>I'll let it slide that one of my least favorite things for people to say is "Is she hungry?" :) </p>
