I haven't been to the south, but I think there are plenty of nice beaches. Porto was super cute and I wish we had had time to do wine/Port tours. We also really loved Lisbon and wished we had stayed a few extra days. Lisbon is a beautiful city to just wander in with tons of good food. If you plan on driving at all, the highways are in excellent shape. Also, you have to eat bacalhau, which is a cod dish.
