I was GBS+ and labored at home until I was having contractions maybe 3-4 min apart. I got to the hospital and they measured me at an 8, so they hooked me up to an IV immediately. Had baby about 3 hrs later.

My MW does periodic vaginal rinses (can't remember what they're called). Still able to move as one pleases & birth in the pool. Like @Protectlove: it wouldn't change our homebirth plans & only if I wanted the IV antibiotics would she bring them.

Evidence based birth has some info on gbs & birth as well that would be worth taking a read. :)

I tested positive for it. I labored in bed with an IV. My dude made labor fun by being squirmy, so there's no way I could have walked around during it. I had two 4 hour courses of antibiotics.

My friend was GBS positive and able to labor in the tub despite being hooked up to the IV. I'm GBS positive but since I'm having a scheduled c-section apparently it's not really a worry and they just give you one dose of antibiotics whenever you get there.

I tested positive with my daughter and still had a home birth with no antibiotics. This is a great page for more info on the GBS issue on a whole.

@TJBee: Yes, they said continue to follow the 5-1-1 rule, so labor at home until my contractions are 5 minutes apart, lasting 1 minute, for 1 hour. Like @locavore_mama: said, if my water breaks that's a different story because baby needs to be delivered within 24 hours to prevent infection.

@TJBee: I think the water breaking is the same for ALL pregnant woman. Once your water breaks they want baby out within 24 hours.

I didn't test positive, but my friend did, and she was still able to go in the tub!

ETA: I had to be hooked to an IV for other reasons, but they were able to unhook it so that I could be in the tub for a while and then just hooked me back up once I was out.

I was hooked up to an IV and made to lay in bed on one side but that was because I was stressing out about the needle (and thus sending both my heart rate as well as LO's all over the place).

When I first found out I was positive, I asked my doctor if I would still be able to walk around and be in the tub. She said they would just put a lock in my hand and they could hook me up to give me the medicine when needed (this also changed because I had to be hooked up to fluids with the heart rate issue).

Edit: I was told to come to the hospital when my contractions were between 3-5 minutes for an hour because they wanted to get at least two doses of antibiotics in me before she was born. Because of different circumstances, we only had time for one, and we had to stay at the hospital 48 hours after she was born to make sure she was fine.

@MapleMoose: They encouraged you to labor at home? My Dr told me the opposite. He said that the minute my water breaks or my contractions are consistent for 1 hour, I need to come to the hospital.

Same as @locavore_mama. I still labored at home for as long as I could. I was 7 cm at the first check when I got to the hospital.

I'm 37 weeks and positive for GBS too. Doctor said I'll be hooked up to an IV but otherwise not much else will change. They encourage me to labor at home as long as possible, walk around a lot, and I can labor in the tub if I want in between doses of IV antibiotics.

@TJBee: I was hooked up to an IV but was free to walk around to encourage labor (water had broken but I didn't progress so needed to be induced about 6 hrs later).

@TJBee: I got group B strep and had to be hooked up to an IV and couldn't roam. The reason my nurse gave me was because the IV machine that allows you to walk around was being used by someone else at the time.

I'm 37 weeks and just found out I'm positive for Group B Strep. I'm a little disappointed because I was hoping to labor at home as long as possible, but as long as I have a healthy baby, I'll do anything.

One quick question: for anyone who tested positive, were you able to go in a tub to labor? Did they try to keep you in bed because of the IV? I'd like all of my options open to be mobile during labor, and I just want to be prepared.

Thanks!
