One more success story to add! I was induced at 37.5w because of preeclampsia (they discovered he was in the 0th percentile!!), and DS was 4lb 11oz. So so tiny! He was in the NICU for about a week and he’s been awesome ever since! He’s 2.5 now.

@Mrs. Carrot: I was charting so I know within a day of when she was conceived too so I think her due date should have been later. Hoping that's all it is.

@PinkElephant: we did genetic testing early and it was a bit of a debate with my doc but now I am so so relieved that we did. The MFM doc said that would normally have been the next test/step to rule out.

@Alivoo01: obviously I want to do whatever is best when the time comes but I really hope to be able to deliver vaginally and I was reading that's often a no in these situations so I'm glad to hear it's not out of the question!

Glad to hear that everyone's kiddos are doing well! I felt better last night but woke up out of a dream sleep just convinced something is wrong. It messes with you! Just taking it one test at a time. I may try to start eating more, especially protein. Not sure if it'll matter but it makes me feel proactive. I've gained 15lbs total but only 1.5 in the last month. With heartburn I've been eating less and since I was feeling better I've been working out more. My nurse said I don't have to change anything but I'm going to ask the MFM doc on Friday.

Both of my kids were IUGR babies and I was induced for both pregnancies due to their size. Both were born vaginally. They both measured on par up until 28 weeks before falling off the scales. They like to quit growing around the 32 week mark for some reason! Odd lil babies. My placenta was sent off for testing after each birth. First one came back a lil calcified, but nothing else. Second one was normal.

DS was born at 37 weeks at 4lbs 11oz and 20" long. He's currently 4 years old and still in the less than 5 percentile for weight and height. However, he's completely healthy and is reaching all milestones on track. He's a skinny lil boy, but his personality definitely doesn't reflect his small stature!

DD was born at 38 weeks at 5lbs 3oz and 19" long. She's currently 19 months old and is also in the bottom percentile. Totally healthy and is super sassy! *lord help me during her teenage years. lol*

My OB said I just don't make big babies! She also mentioned recent studies have shown taking baby aspirin can assist with IUGR babies also. Not sure what exactly, but mentioned she'd prescribe that to me should we have a third.

My third baby (all girls!) was IUGR/SGA. It was caught at my anatomy scan. I had an amino to determine that there was not a genetic cause for her size, and tons of extra monitoring (twice weekly) throughout pregnancy. I was induced st 36-37 weeks because she stopped making progress in her growth in utero. She was born at about 4.5 lbs, 16 inches......but did no NICU time, which I still can't believe. My placenta was small, and the umbilicalcord was short and thin. The doctor had to take it out manually because she was afraid some would tear and get left behind.

She will be one next week, and is still small - she doesn't touch the growth charts, but after the first few months we stopped the extra weight checks, because she was staying on her own steady growth curve. We are starting early intervention this week for a slight gross motor delay (she was late to sit and crawl, and doesnt stand yet), but she has already improved so much since her evaluation that I'm not worried. Plus, she is super social and scored fine on her evaluations for social, cognitive, and fine motor skills.

Comparatively, my older daughter's wee 5 lbs 11 oz and 5 lbs 14 oz at birth, both around 18 inches, and they're now at 3 and 5 just on the small side of average. They weren't born in the auS and I suspect if they had been, we might have undergone similar concerns during my pregnancies.

Good luck to you! I hope things go as smoothly as possible! Feel free to reach out with questions!

My now 4 year old was an IUGR kid. In my case, no one caught it and just assumed her conception was dated wrong (even though we had been trying so intentionally that I knew exactly when she was conceived), and because DH and I are both small as well. She was born at 36 weeks at 4 lbs 6 oz - I was induced because she hadn't grown between 32 and 36 weeks, and the doc felt she would do better outside than inside. My placenta was tiny, but I had a perfectly healthy pregnancy otherwise. Kiddo spend 10 days in the NICU to make sure she was growing and holding body temp (she had no medical issues, wasn't on oxygen or ventilators, just monitored for growth), and even though she was tiny, she was never behind in any way, despite just being on the smaller side of the growth curve. She's now 4, an active, energetic, super bright kid. Our ped assured us from day 1 that someone had to round out the curve on the bottom end, so as long as you're being actively monitored, that's key. Good luck!

Thank you ladies so so much for sharing! DH was a small kid growing up even through high school and caught up later in life. I'm a twin who was a preemie so I was a NICU baby, only 3 lbs 9oz, but my mom was also AMA. I tend not to take my own birth too much into account because of the circumstances. I am sure it's nothing to worry about but definitely better safe and monitoring now!

My first son was born at 38 weeks - 5 lb 5 oz and 17.5 inches. He's been 5th percentile for weight his whole life, though he's now around 30th for height. Totally healthy.

My second son I had suspected IUGR. Weekly scans showed he was doing well and growing on track etc. However, at 38 weeks they determined no interval growth so I was induced. He was born 5 lb 6 oz and 19 inches. He's a little bigger than my first, around 20th for weight and 30th for height. Totally healthy.

My third son I also had growth scans in the third trimester. His growth was pretty average throughout but I went into spontaneous labor at 38 weeks (I suspect I was actually only 37 weeks). He was born 6 lb even and 19 inches. Totally healthy.

I'm only 5'2 and 110 lbs pre pregnancy. My husband is 5'6. We just don't make big babies. Someone has to make up the bottom of the growth curve! It's good you'll have that extra reassurance with the ultrasounds, even if it is really annoying and time consuming!

@starchild: yah im sure nothings wrong but better safe then sorry you know? The kids pediatrician isn't worried at all my kids are just small. With true iugr I think blood flow is restricted so the babies can't grow well and they'll grow better on the outside. That wasn't the case for me but better to watch it. If you search I think I even had a thread about it and others have gone through the same thing as well

ETA they didn't note anything with my placentas after birth either time

I had a similar experience but they caught it later on due to my belly size. LO was perfectly healthy, just small. The placenta was fine. No explanation for it at all. I've had 2 other babies since that were both average size. My oldest is still tiny and has always fallen right around 5% on the growth chart and he is now 5. He was 5lbs 12 oz at birth. My other 2 were 7 lbs 10 & 15 oz.

Eta I think his diagnosis was also SGA not IUGR. Our kids are all slow growers so he was labeled failure to thrive as a baby because he just never made up for his lower birth weight. All my kids seem to grow at the same rate but the other ones were never labeled FTT. DH is tall but skinny (6 ft and 150 lbs) and I am short and average size (5'3 and 120) so it's not in their genes to be big people.

@gotkimchi: thank you for sharing. All along we have said she'll probably be on the small side but I didn't think it would be an issue. Hoping that's all it is and glad to hear your kiddos are doing well!

I had this same scenario and did twice weekly monitoring until the end of my pregnancy with periodic growth scans. My first baby was 6lb 2oz and my second 5lb 11oz. My husband and I are both small so we weren't suprised. I think we ended up technically being classified as small for gestational age and not iugr after the births. One thing I found was if I had different techs doing the growth scans we got different measurements- he was down to 5% some times which they didn't like. He was small and continues to be small but no problems. So in summary try not to worry! The extra appointments were a pain in the butt but I liked getting to see the baby more

At our anatomy scan, Baby Girl was curled up and they couldn't get all the views of her heart that they needed, so they scheduled us for a follow up. She was 39th percentile for growth. I'm 27w6d and we went back today. Thankfully her organs and blood flow looked good, but they are concerned about her size. My maternal fetal medicine doc who evaluated the ultrasound was great and reassuring, and he asked that I come in twice a week for monitoring now, once with him and once with my regular doc. I had a regular appt immediately after (same building) so I saw my doc then for a previously scheduled rhogam shot. My doc is a super nice guy but his reaction was a bit stronger. He said baby is down to 6th percentile and explained how the monitoring will work. If I drop below a certain score I have to redo it within 24 hrs and if I drop below a lower score I'll be sent to the hospital. Thankfully we had genetic testing done already so we know we are clear for that but they are worried about the possibility of issues with my placenta.

I'm fairly petite, and my husband was only 7lbs when he was born. Also at her first tri dating scan, she was measuring on the cusp of a later due date but one day shy of officially changing it. I passed my glucose test and have been eating well and working out. I have asthma and had a head cold for a few days but haven't had any extended trouble breathing or with oxygen. Logically I am sure everything is fine and she's probably just on the small side and maybe younger than we are tracking to, but it's hard not to worry when the monitoring is so serious and we found it so early. I'll go every Tuesday for Doppler ultrasound and every Friday for a biophysical. If she stays low, they won't let me go past 38w. Does anyone else have any experience with this or especially positive stories of baby being fine despite it?
