@LittleGBee: twins? Wow! I did breastfeeding my son until he was 2. What about trying an expensive hypo allergenic formula? We did that when my son was 9 months old and it really kick started a weight recovery for him.

For hunger I really found that nuts were very important and satisfying. I also are more carbs (rice etc). Sunbutter became my best friend.

@brownie: Thanks. I'm also nursing our daughter, so I just worry about my supply and being hungry all the time. I'm already super hungry without milk!

I'll start planning on eliminating soy along with dairy while we see a naturopath and continue with the GI. I really do think his eczema, intestinal bleeding, and mucous-y poops are related to a food intolerance.

@LittleGBee: I did all foods and added them back in but we were miserable. Though with MSPI I would do both milk and soy at the same time. My pediatrician didn't know anything about MSPI and I learned everything I know from the internet. We didn't see a Gastro until he was 9 months old.

@brownie: Do you mean eliminate all the possible foods and see or just one at a time? I was going with the one at a time method, but I've spent today trying to wrap my head around possibly doing an elimination diet for a longer period of time.

I spoke with the GI specialist about the mucousy poop and she wasn't the least bit concerned. Which is beyond confusing for me. I just...ugh. She did say I could bring the poop in to get it tested for blood, so I'll do that on Friday when we're there for a blood draw anyway.

@LittleGBee: my personal belief is that it is easier to eliminate food and see. The mucous sounds like what we had it was almost sleek and shiny. The blood and blood vomiting we never experienced. Our son was very uncomfortable by it all. He literally screamed 12-15 hours every day from 2 days on until 3 months.

@MamaJ: Thanks for sharing your experience. I think the GI isn't looking into it right now because I insisted that his poops were normal breastfed poops. She never saw a typical poop for him because they were full of digested blood. I showed some pictures of MSPI poop to my husband though, and he was like "That's what his poop looks like!" So, I'll be making a lot of phone calls tomorrow to see what to do next.

@LittleGBee: eczema and mucusy stool were our signs of a dairy intolerance. He also had horrible and painful gas that he couldn't pass. He would scream in pain and wake up every hour almost because he couldn't pass his gas.

To me it sounds like mspi. But not sure why the GI doc wouldn't look into that?

@brownie: I haven't eliminated soy...yet. I wanted to take it one step at a time seeing as how my diet was already limited.

I guess my question is more like...Does this sound like MSPI? Should I be more assertive with the GI specialist to have her seriously consider it as a possibility?

I like her, but her focus seems so narrow. Surely as a GI specialist she's seen MSPI before, any thoughts as to why she wouldn't be considering this? I don't know. I feel like I'm grasping for reasons over here, and I totally broke my "No Googling" rule. Blerg.

Yeah, mine was more sensitive to soy than dairy. Also she was sensitive to all beans actually, which is common with mspi. Unfortunately, soy is in everything.

You are gluten free and milk free. Have you tried eliminating soy? Many (like 70%) of dairy intolerant kids are also soy intolerant. And of course there are crazy kids like mine who are more sensitive to the soy than milk. I know when I went off of milk I substituted more with soy and that made things worse.

There is also FPIES which is almost any possible food protein. It is hard to figure out.

Our little guy has been having a rough go at it lately, and I was hoping to get some wisdom from the hive.

My son is 3.5 months old, EBF, I am gluten-free, and as of 2 weeks ago, dairy free. I am gluten sensitive and feel better off of it, and I eliminated dairy to see if it would help my son's eczema.

A month ago we were admitted to Children's for observation because he started vomiting blood. About 12 hours in, he had digested blood in his stool, we thought from the initial vomiting of blood. We decided against scoping at that point, because it was an isolated incident, his blood levels were stable, and he was otherwise healthy.

Fast forward to two days ago, when I opened his diaper to find a huge amount of digested blood. We were admitted again, and the GI specialist did an endoscopy and everything looks healthy. He had a few more dirty diapers, all with decreasing amounts of digested blood, and we were discharged with a plan to check for a diverticulum (extra portion of intestine). It's going to be a long road to any diagnosis because of his size and the fact that the symptoms are intermittent.

I can't help but shake the feeling that his eczema and his GI issues are intertwined, but the GI specialist doesn't really seem to think they are. I was wondering, though, could all of this be related to MSPI? I was changing his diaper today and noticed it was kind of mucousy looking, and that really hasn't been out of the ordinary for him. Sometimes he'll have typical EBF poop (yellow, mustardy, etc), and other times its green and slimy. I just always attributed the green to him not getting enough hind-milk, but now I'm questioning it. (I can provide a picture if you'd like, but I'm fairly certain that people won't enjoy looking at a picture of poop)

Any thoughts? We're trying to get into a naturopath to look at him from a more holistic viewpoint while pursuing the medical side as well, but finances are super super tight right now. I just don't know how to best advocate for him right now.
