@Happygal: What a great suggestion! The truth is, I am not a pro by any stretch of the imagination, but I do take my photography very seriously. I would just want to make sure that I communicate my amateur-ness! This kind of work would make me so happy :)

Also, tutoring could be great. My field is somewhat narrow and is only offered on the graduate level, so I would need to market myself properly. This is great food for thought, though.

@littlek: Yeah I'm not allowed to work an addl job, and when govt shutdown hit people were unable to provide legal services at a side job. Luckily I wasnt furloughed during it, but our rules are so strict even if we,wanted to do a non-legal services side hustle!

With graduate school degrees, you may be marketable in the tutoring world. Through a tutoring company, you can make around $25 an hour. On your own, you could double that price.

Photographers are very expensive in my town, so if someone offered a more competitive price, they would be popular. You could have great flexibility doing mini photo sessions for people. I would really encourage looking at that possibility!

@Periwinkle: I wonder if there is a way for you to offer photography basics classes for people. A lot of people get new cameras either right before the holidays or as a gift and want some help figuring it out. You could try registering on Wyzant.com which is a tutoring middle man type site (but they take a cut of your earnings) or on craigslist. Another thing I know would do well around here is posting flyers in coffee shops etc. offering mini sessions to take people's holiday card photos. You would have to have flyers up super quickly but I think people would love that option.

We don't have kids yet but my go to when we could use a little extra money is extra babysitting. Do you have a local group of moms you could tap into? Perhaps some people would be interested in dropping off their little ones for a few hours so they can shop.

My husband occasionally does freelance work doing websites but it is something he sort of does as a profession anyway so he has connections and the skills. I would try to find something that fits like that OR go with retail that has a great discount.

I would suggest Etsy if you have anything crafy you can sell ... Maybe some Still Photos? TBH Still Photos don't seem to do that well, the things that tend to do well are soap and jewelry. Just a thought. Maybe you can sell things you don't use on EBay.

I worked part time at the mall and then at a consignment type store before LO was here (in addition to working full time). Retail can be great if your weekends are free... but they can be pretty demanding around the holidays, in my experience.

@Mrs. Jacks: I would really love to, espcially something from home, but I don't know what :( I am an amateur photographer and am actually shooting a wedding (a really, really casual one!) next year, and have sort of thought about doing this, but I am not very good.

My husband works for the federal government, and decided to take a part-time job after he was furloughed in July through October. His part-time job also offered us a little extra security during the October government shutdown.

He designed and teaches two introductory math classes for a local college. He did all of his course design in August, and from September through December he teaches 2 hours a day, 4 days a week. He also corrects homework/tests in the evenings and on weekends. This semester is almost over, but he signed on for two semesters, so he has two more classes next spring. We'll see what happens next year, but for now this is guaranteed income for us in case of another furlough/shutdown, and that's a big relief. In the meantime, we're just banking every cent of his paycheck and we're both looking for jobs outside the federal government. Hopefully one of us will be in a different job next year and he'll ditch his second job!

Similar to the coaching idea, what about becoming a referee or umpire? My dad did this all the time when I was young, and it can pay really well.

Sending you hugs, lady. At one point this summer, DH and I both had two jobs. It's a tough thing, whatever you decide to do. Hope you can find a solution that works for your family!

We are exactly the same! We live comfortably and always have everything we need, but money is tight otherwise. Seems like everytime we get a little bit of breathing room something comes up!

At the moment we are looking into trading our nice, newer '09 truck for an older (but still dependable) SUV and using the boot to pay off my car loan. I wasn't for it at first but the extra $300 a month will be nice if the car is paid off.

Oh and I forgot to add, if it were me and I were looking for a seasonal retail job, I would try to get one at Nordstrom selling shoes. I'm pretty sure those guys do really well! Alternatively, Macy's shoes is supposed to be great too. Both work on commissions but if you don't make minimum wage, they top you up.

@Periwinkle: I took on a part time retail job during the holiday's once. It was hard. While I didn't mind working the hours, they always seemed to "forget" I had a full time job elsewhere and would try to schedule me for daytime work on weekdays. So I always had to keep a tight watch on the schedule. Also, I worked at a place that was open at midnight Black Friday, open on Christmas Eve, etc. Those are tough days to work if you have a family but if you're in a bind, a part time seasonal job is a great option. Plus, if the employee is a hard worker, some seasonal employees get picked up after the seasonal work is over to continue working for the company.

Ditto on @sunny:'s suggestion. My hubs has always coached a baseball team and/or given baseball lessons to kids. He surprisingly makes a ridiculous amount of extra change for doing this. He loves doing it, so its not quite like a job to him. Maybe you have some extra skill. Like tutoring kids or something.

This is the best time of the year to get hired in retail. Lot's of stores keep some of their holiday hires on for the rest of the year (maybe just limited hours, which would be perfect for your situation).

We haven't done it since we had LO but both DH and I have taken on 2nd jobs. DH took on a part time retail (100% commission) job while working a 9-5 primary office job. He ended up enjoying the part time job more, went full time, and is now GM of that store! I took on a home healthcare job on evenings and weekends while working full time as a receptionist. DH insisted I quit when I got pregnant.

((((hugs))) and good luck! Money is tight for us too so I'm here if you ever want to talk!

@Periwinkle: I totally feel you! We have a little side income from Wagon Sr.'s sporadic tutoring gigs, which is helpful. But in tight times we've discussed one or both of us taking on part-time work. Holiday / seasonal work would probably be great option for you, and somewhere where you could take advantage of discounts would be great!
