I'm so sorry for your loss.
I've had two D&C's. The first I bled for two weeks (was 9 weeks along). The second I bled minimally for a week and then heavy for two weeks (was 12 weeks along.
With both I had minor cramping but no stabbing pain. I would call your on to voice your concerns
It can't hurt to talk to the doctor and see if they think it's normal.

I don't know if my experience was normal but I had almost no pain following my D&C (very different than my natural miscarriage). I had some light cramping the day of my procedure so I took ibuprofen once but otherwise I felt pretty good. Going to the bathroom was also a non-issue for me. I even woke up the next morning and went to work for a full day. My doctor told me she hopped on an airplane the day after she'd had her own D&C. If I were you, I'd call my doctor's office and speak with one of the nurses to see if they think you should come back in to be checked out for retained tissue, etc.

@Pollywog: yeah I didn't take any meds are my first LO. I did on the hospital after DD2 but not at home. I'm definitely surprised by how much I've needed after this. Sometimes I feel the sharp pain when pooping during my period so maybe it's not something to be too concerned about then...

I had mine a year ago. I am so sorry you are going through this.

I bleed for 3-4 days and then on day 7 I passed huge clots and then bled heavily for 24 hours.

I generally don't do painkillers, but I know I took more for my D&C than when I gave birth (despite major tearing giving birth). I know I took ibuprofen for the first two weeks, maybe longer. My uterus hurt and I was surprised that I needed something to help, but the painkillers really did help.

I don't remember having sharp pains pooping, but I know I had them after birth when my uterus was finally shrinking back to normal. I was told that it was common. I found coffee made it much better.

@catlady: @runnerd: I have my follow up on the 27th...they said to call if I bleed longer than a week and a half but my appointment is 2 weeks after my surgery so I was planning on just sticking it out unless the pain far exceeded my meds. I just was curious what others experience was. I have no idea what's normal.

I bled for an unusually long time post-D&C, but I really wasn't in any pain. I didn't take the meds after the first 2 days. I did have cramping and continue to pass clots at points, but nothing else. Might be worth calling Doctor - though I will say, it took over a month for them to take my concerns seriously on my bleeding, so they may just say call if it's still happening later.

I'm sorry for your loss. Have you called your OB? I'm not sure if it's normal to still feel pain a week later. You may have some retained tissue...that's what happened to me. In my case, I think I had pain for maybe 2 days post-D&C, and light bleeding for 4-5 days. After that it all stopped and I felt great. Then 2 weeks post D&C, I got horrible stabbing pains and started bleeding a ton. I saw my midwife and they almost made be get another D&C but then decided that I had passed most of it on my own. It took another week after that to be totally over (with mild cramps but no sharp pains).

I had my D&C on Thursday. I've 2 days where I haven't needed pain meds at all, 2 days where I ended up taking both the ibuprofen and hydrocondone and the rest of the days I've managed with just one ibuprofen. But the pain is still lingering. I can still function after taking pain meds but I'm usually still not feeling great. My BM 's are normal ish. A little firmer than usual but I don't have a ton of trouble going. But i do get stabbing pains in my side/uterus when I try to go. Is that normal? Do I need to take more colace? How long will I bleed? It's really starting to seem like a lot of blood. When does the pain stop? Sometimes it's so sharp I can't breathe. I'm really feeling guilty for taking painkillers daily. This is just really hard.
