I had mine encapsulated. I have experienced issues with anxiety in the past and wanted to have all options available to me if I had postpartum anxiety/depression. I just had my LO 11 days ago and so far haven't had any issues. I'm not taking the pills every day so I'm not sure if they really help but it we worth the cost to me just in case. I think they will be helpful when I return to work.

@pastemoo: Yes! The service I used offered all those services so I did everything. She made a print with the placenta before the encapsulation process and also made a tincture and salve. I took the capsules during the immediate post-partum period and used the salve (which was similar to but a little thicker than aquaphor) on my c-section scar and stretch marks. The tincture I actually haven't used yet but I have 2, one is adult strength and one is for the child. She told me to use during times of transition - starting school, growth spurts etc. and that women use it during their menstrual cycle and especially during menopause. There are a few times in hindsight I realized I should of used it with my kids but I forgot in the moment. I hope that helps!

I heard a story on npr that eating it (through whatever method) may actually be hazardous because part of the function of the placenta is to filter what gets to the baby so it may be "holding" the toxins that don't get through. The story said more research needed to be done, and also mentioned there's no proof it has benefits either, but maybe that's the kind of research that it's being done with the ones that have been donated! Interesting stuff!

I requested to see mine, because I'm a nerd, but then it went to pathology and medical waste. My husband wanted to cook it up and eat it, but I wasn't particularly interested in eating it and neither of us was interested in encapsulation. If we were in a permanent home, we might have buried it, but we rent, so we didn't bother.

@mrswin: They only need a very small amount for each training session, so a placenta goes a long way. They were very respectful and grateful for the donation. I wish more people knew about this option.

My husband grew up on a farm, and his parents buried his placenta under an apple tree in the orchard. His dad still sends him a few of "his" apples every year for his birthday. He and his brother have mock fights about whose apples are better. We would like to do something similar with our daughter's placenta, but we have lived in a series of apartments since she was born, so it's still sitting in a mini-cooler in our freezer. We just bought a house, so we will need to figure out a plan for it in the spring!

Both times, it was medical waste! I don't have a history of severe hormonal mood swings, and no history of depression or anxiety, so I didn't research anything else. I also wasn't emotionally attached in any way, so planting under a tree or something is not for me. I didn't even look at my placenta--I've had two kids and literally have never seen a placenta in my life.
