@wheres_c: use heat for the cramps!!! This time at the hospital they gave me these disposable heat pads meant for your back. I basically wore one all the time the first several days and it helped so much with the cramping. That plus ibuprofen!

@littlejoy: No fever. The retained placenta is not infected and I'm not in any pain. The only way I knew was the clots around 4 weeks and the fact the bleeding seemed to get heavier at 4 weeks (went from spotting to a heavy period-like flow). I knew that there were some placenta fragments that had to be retrieved at birth so I was also half expecting to have some issues after that.

@Shantuck: This was my worry too (especially because I had some major breastfeeding issues). Did you have a fever?

I feel like I had a heavy period for a few days, then a normal flow for several more weeks. I think I needed a pad for something like 7 weeks! I honestly thought maybe it would never stop, ha.

I was told to call if I passed any clots the size of a golf ball or larger or if the bleeding got heavier rather than lighter. I called and got checked out when I passed a large clot (about the size of a golf ball) 4 weeks postpartum and it turns out that I have a portion of retained placenta. I debated calling but I'm glad I did. Not saying you have issues like that but something to consider.

@wheres_c: Take ibuprofen on a regular 6 hour schedule, it helps so much with the cramping! I always thought the post partum cramping was right up there with contractions, so terrible.

The first week or so I went through several mondo pads a day, and any clots got progressively smaller. I couldn't go without a thin pad or panty liner for about a month after, but the continuous flow stopped after ~7-10 days.

I think you're probably ok. I wouldn't really worry about the gushes. In fact I had something happen like that the month before getting pregnant with #2. It was the weirdest period ever. That said if it gets heavier maybe just call for peace of mind.

@DesertDreams88: I had the same thing but on day 1. I went to pee and had 2 or 3 giant clots and it totally freaked me out!!

@MrsSRS: ya, this is what would happen to me, because the nursing would cause uterine contractions.

I bled quite heavily in those first few weeks, but I tend to have heavier periods too. Not sure if there's a correlation...

Is it possible that the gushing coincides with standing or changing position? I know I sat nursing a lot in those early days, so then there would be a gush when I got up, which is normal.

A lot. Probably bumping right up against soaking a pad an hour for the first few days. Several large clots for days too. And the bleeding for me lasted I think 5 weeks (much lighter after the first 2 or 3 though). I have heavy periods too - I think some people just bleed more. I never had any issues, it's just annoying to deal with.

I had a lot of bleeding. Specifically, on day 3 I passed a clot the size of a baseball. The discharge directions said to go to the ER if I passed a clot larger than a golf ball, so I did. I was ok. It cost me $800 for that ER visit.

How much post partum bleeding did you have?
My doctor said to call if I had more than one soaked pad an hour....
I don't think I'm quite at that level but definitely have more bleeding than I expected.
I had a vbac delivery.
I keep having a small gush every hour or so...
