From my postpartum care class last night - my take-home items from the hospital will include:
- Invalid ring (aka: donut for sitting)
- Giant maxi pads
- Peri bottle (to clean "down there" after going to the bathroom)
- Tucks
- Anusol (if the dr. prescribes)
- Pain meds (whatever the dr. prescribes)
- Stool softener (whatever the dr. prescribes)

I figure that I'll buy some additional maxi pads to have on-hand at home (and probably to wear on my way to the hospital if my water breaks). But it seems like my hospital will send me home with enough to get through a few days.

Also, be aware that you might not end up needing stuff... I'm so glad I didn't stock up on a bunch of "must haves" because I really didn't need them.
My bleeding was pretty light (it's almost over now at 4 weeks pp) and I didn't have any tearing or stitches so I didn't need extra stuff for "down there".
The only thing I've really needed is pads. I've got through about 3.5 packs of them.
But obviously everyone is different- just thought I'd offer another perspective! Good luck :)

@looch: that is a really good idea! I used those in hospital but just used a towel at home.

Another thing I just remembered is those small waterproof mattress pads you can buy at CVS. I had two, one for the bed and one for the couch, just in case I leaked out of the pads when I sat down. Much better than having to deal with extra laundry.

@cupcakemama: I'm so jealous that you didn't leak!!! I feel like an ever running tap, I go through at least 2 breast pads per day on each side...... I keep hearing that it will taper off but I'm losing hope!

I second the sitz bath if you don't have one, and the fluffy toilet paper, it's crucial.

I didn't use breast pads as I didn't leak at all. My supply was really good and in 8 months ebf used maybe 2 pads. So I probably wouldn't stock up til you know you will need them. Same for a lot of the other stuff - what if you have a c section?
Maternity pads- you'll need lots! Buy some to start then buy more as you need them.

The hospital gave me enough of pretty much everything to last me the 3 weeks that I needed it.

One thing that I really appreciated- we were almost out of toilet paper my first day home, my MIL went out and bought the super expensive really fluffy kind. It was a very smart move, I had to pee all the time for a while (especially with hydrating for breast feeding). Usually I am too cheap to buy the expensive kind, but this is a time to splurge!

I have a post-partum care class this evening that my hospital has available. I'll see if there's anything of value to share here.
I have a sitz bath and stool softener at home already (courtesy of my mom). Now that I've decided to try pumping (instead of formula-only), I need to look into the breast care.
@skibobrown: Thanks for the link - I'll definitely be checking this one out!

@regberadaisy: You should be able to find witch hazel in any drugstore (CVS, Rite Aid, etc.) It's usually in the same aisle as the first aid stuff near the hydrogen peroxide and alcohol.

I got the Lansinoh disposable breast pads.
Tucks (tucks also has witch hazel in it)
Stool softener I got was Colace.
I also got some sitz bath stuff and Earth Mama's Bottom Spray.

My doula recommended dousing some pads in witch hazel and freezing them. :)

Not sure if anyone has tried it, but the nurse who taught our baby care essentials class recommended we all buy "hibiclense"...its the same stuff used for surgery prep, but she said it was good at keeping down there clean and speeding up the healing process.

You may want to look into gas meds, like Gas X. They made me take it every day at the hospital. Trust me, you do NOT want gas building up in your system after a baby!

@regberadaisy: I didn't last very long nursing so I didn't try out very many. I actually didn't even buy my own, I just used whatever my friend gave me from her leftovers. I had planned on using cloth.... but that didn't work out either.

Well I'm still figuring this out for myself, but as far as postpartum breast care goes, I just bought this cute little pack of supplies that I think will come in handy. The only thing it seems to be missing is some lanolin cream, so I threw a small tube of it into the pouch as well:

For nursing pads, I liked the disposable kind best. I tried the cloth ones, but really who has time for more laundry and I leaked right through them.

And yes you'll want stool softener! Your "down there" parts will have just got through a lot. I think I was more scared of my first poo after I delivered then actually going through delivery.

I'm officially 35 weeks today!

I really need to start accumulating post partum/ care items.

Things off the top of my head that I need are:
(ETA: Disposable) nursing pads (brand?)
breastmilk storage bags (which brand do you like? I've heard Lasinoh)
heavy overnight pads (for bleeding)
Ice packs
Witch hazel (what is this??? and where do I find it?)
Ibuprofen
Peri Bottle ( I think my hospital gives this out)
Stool Softener (I've been very loose during pregnancy despite being on iron pills twice a day so I wonder if I'll need it on hand!)

Any others?

What specific products worked for you?

Thanks!
