Here's the wikipedia on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy

I've also heard great things about integrating Mindfulness and meditation. Check out Jon Cabot-Zinn's work.

@Mrs. Jacks: I started exercise right at 6weeks post-partum and I've been going 2-4x a week, I'm sure it would be worse if I wasn't working out.

I was on vitamin D during pregnancy since my levels were low, but I just ran out a month ago, I should get some more. Thanks for reminding me!

I don't quite get how CBT works, do you know?

@Coco Bee: I also was going to suggest CBT and exercise :) Also they might check your vitamin D level in case you need supplementation.

@Coco Bee: It runs in my family too :( Thankfully I haven't had much problems with it ever since I realized depending on pills was not the life for me.

Here is one non-drug intervention that can be effective against depression:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy

I'm a big believer in CBT!

My experience with PPD was very difficult. I was also dealing with a lot of legal issues at the time regarding my former work. That made the PPD that much worse. I remember spending days crying while my baby napped or while changing his diapers. I also did not feel like myself. I felt detached from my baby and especially my husband. My psychiatrist convinced me to take a new drug that you can breast feed on. It is fast acting and works very well for me. It's called Citalopram. I'm still on it right now.

My best advice is to tell somebody. Don't be afraid to talk about it. Lots of people go through it. It is nothing to be ashamed of!

@cyndistar3: yeah, I'm not a fan of anti-depressants either.
Depression runs in my family, and my mom has had severe depression several times in her life. After her mom died she went on anti-depressants and it made her situation worse.

@Mrs. Jacks: what type of "intervention" is there? I mean, I am a healthy young woman, and no matter what I feel I would never harm my LO. I also would be against anti-depressants especially while breastfeeding.

@Ms.SK: Yeah, that's a good idea. My midwife told me that even though my care formally ended, to call with any questions. I'll keep that in mind and decide if I want to do that..

I would love to hear more about your journey. There is so much guilt associated with post-partum depression that there isn't with regular depression because of my baby. I hate that I feel angry toward him when he has done nothing wrong and is just a perfect, sweet baby.

That is amazing about your twins! Congrats and that's so great about your midwife, i'm glad you had a strong support system.

What was your diet like? Do you feel that may have affected things?

I was diagnosed after my miscarriage. First, what u are feeling are your feelings. Give yourself permission to have whatever emotions you may have on this journey. Second, take it one day at a time. Tomorrow, reach out to your Midwife/OB. Their care does not end at birth. You were strong to reach out on the boards, all of us are here for u.
MY journey has been a long struggle but my midwives played a big role in my recovery and year and a half journey back to good health. I tell one of them she is the reason I am pregnant with twins. We are naming one baby with her in mind. The hardest part for a control lover like me was to ask for help. I also didn't tell my husband what I was feeling.
I wish I could offer more advice and will be happy to answer any questions you have about my experience. Please don't hesitate to reach out again.

You can talk to your OB or pediatrician and they can help assess the issue and figure out whether it's just baby blues or needs some intervention. And of course you always have us!

Has anyone dealt with this that might be willing to share their experience?

I have a history of depression, it runs in my family, and received counseling in high school that really helped me learn how to deal with it. And it's been off and on since then, so I was worried about post-partum depression but the first two months were so great. Until this past week. Nothing really happened, but mostly in the evenings I've been getting really depressed and as awful as it sounds, I even start to get mad at and resent my LO. I hate feeling that way toward him, I read that that was normal?

I haven't told my husband yet either. I feel embarrassed about it, even though I know it's not my fault.
