@T-Mom: that is what I am worried about. I breastfed my first for 2 years and it's hard to imagine stopping before that and simultaneously hard to imagine hives for that long.

I had a horrible hivey rash for several months after having my first. It only stopped after I quit breastfeeding (4 months). I tried lots of tropical creams like sarna lotion, pine tar soap etc, and nothing worked. I think I talked to my OB about it and she looked at me like I had two heads when I suggested it might be PUPPS. I did not have this issue with my second, and I nursed him for over a year. I hope you get some answers and relief!

Well I'm not sure what my plan of action is but they have spread to my face and that is unacceptable. Ugh, everything else is so easy.

@brownie: I had PUPPS while pregnant with my son. It was hell on earth for about 2 weeks and then thankfully went away. Things that helped a lot:

- Grandpa's Pine Tar Soap (it smells awful but helped! Shower with it)
- Sarna lotion
- Oatmeal baths

I also took Benadryl, but if you are nursing it can hurt your supply. It came back briefly (3-4 days) after giving birth, and thankfully not as fierce. I"m so sorry you are struggling with it, but from all the research I did, it seems it dies down after 2 weeks. I'd still check with your midwife or OBGYN to see if they can help!

@Cchoi4: I did have a boy! I remember having the same type of rash with my daughter, but it was on my back and my OB chalked it up to the adhesive used to secure my spinal block to my back (I had a non-scheduled c-section). This time, I got the rash on my stomach only, and there was a bit of iodine leftover from my scheduled c-section, so I assumed it was that.

But reading these responses, I'm wondering if it was just my body freaking out from the hormones, etc. Again, it lasted about a week, and it was itchy as hell but completely cleared up on it's own. Only thing I did was apply lotion to it (regular body lotion) because that seemed to make it feel better.

@Adira: which doctor? Midwife or primary care?

This is this morning after taking Benadryl last night. This was during the first nursing session at 9 am after not feeding since 6 am.

It has spread up my back and across my chest as . I would say at this point a good 75% of my body is covered in these hives. They seem to die down in one are and flair up in a new area.

@Cchoi4: this totally happened to me! My rash looked exactly the same, but it was only on my stomach. Itched like crazy for about a week and now it's totally gone. I'm currently 2.5 weeks postpartum.

With both my pregnancies I had a hivey rash for about a week. It would flare up and be super itchy at times and at others, it would be pretty bearable. I always thought it to be the PUPPP rash.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pruritic_urticarial_papules_and_plaques_of_pregnancy

Some of my girlfriends also said they had this type of postpartum rash. Some took claritin (dr. ok'ed) but that didn't work for me, although they swear by it. Cold baths/showers and lotion did help at times.

I just waited it out. :( (sorry for the gross photo!)

I didn't have hives per se, but I got a couple of mosquito bites and then had a severe reaction to them shortly postpartum. I had to get something prescription strength to fix it, and they told me it's common when your body has been through so much to do something super weird like that! So don't hesitate to get it checked out!
